Thrash metal guitars

Well, i am searching the best guitar for playing thrash metal. and i'm a little confused. the first question is: are mahogany bodies there for rhythm guitarists, and alder bodies for soloists? today i heard sd blackouts and it's sounds to me much better than sd distortion or emg 81, but those three are the main to me... there are some of guitars, which i found:

1. JACKSON DK2T DINKY, sd pickups, alder body with flame maple venner .
2. LTD MH 350 NT, emg pickups, mahogany body, with flame maple top .

Which of these are better for rhythm and which for solos?

Both guitars have maple neck, rosewood fingerboard and string thru body bridge style. Jackson is made in japan, while Ltd is made in korea.

I don't even know if i wanna play rhythm or solos in band in future... maybe the rhythm is more close to me. which guitar to choose if i wanna play ryhthm and solos, both?

Thanks for answers, suggestions etc.

Re: Thrash metal guitars

Have you played these guitars? If so, pick the one you like best. If not go out and play a bunch of guitars, find out which one you like the best.

Re: Thrash metal guitars

i love how polarizing this is

Jackson vs ESP
EMG vs Duncan
Rhythm vs Lead

music is not black or white. learn to play with colors.

Re: Thrash metal guitars

That must be it

If you can't play rhythm or lead on either one, you need more practice at both.

How do these rumors get started? Is it the drugs?

Re: Thrash metal guitars

Buy the ESP. The EMG's have all the output you'll need and are good for soloing. Also, they're really quiet, so you can experiment with all the distortion you want. You'll be able to use all the effects you'd like to chain up at once with no ill-effects and your cables can be as long as you want them to be.

Re: Thrash metal guitars

No... go play both and pick which one sounds and feels better to you. There are no hard fast rules to this. You can solo on mahogany you can play rhythm on emgs. My requirements for thrash more have to do with what I need in terms of action and set up. Something thats better established by actually playing the guitar

Re: Thrash metal guitars

No! Go and buy the ESP, OP. Otherwise you'll you'll run into tone and noise issues with the Jackson. I'm sure you'll want to keep on playing with the other pieces of gear you already own and the EMG's will help to ease you into the transition. I don't know you, OP, but I want you to be able to experiment and to keep on playing music without any interruptions.

Re: Thrash metal guitars

Check the masterpieces of thrash. All of them where played on so many different guitars.
The Dinky is a very well made instrument. So is the LTD, although except the looks, the Dinky is a tad better build.

Re: Thrash metal guitars

^ ? No! Go buy a Daisyrock, beat it against the sidewalk a few times, put EMGs in it and your set!

Re: Thrash metal guitars

I think i'll buy that LTD MH 350 NT for the beggining. one more question: do the maple top on mahogany based body, makes guitar sounds a little brighter?
Yes, the colors of the sound.. i already have Hamer XT Standard Korina Explorer, and the body it's 80% of maple, and top is korina, for about 20%. so i already have experience of the bright sounding guitar. good, but not so fun... but now i want darker sound, even for solos. so i think i'll buy that ltd. i already like the fuzz overdriven tone, but that's another thing..

It can, but I wouldn't worry about any substantial amount of brightness; mahogany retains it's character pretty well in my experiences.

Experiment, have fun, and get back to us with your results. :)

Re: Thrash metal guitars

^ you could say that about most "metal" guitars

they're just regular guitars with hotter pickups and maybe flatter fretboards...

Re: Thrash metal guitars

Get a strat and throw a set of distortions in there and plug into something hot, if you can't rock out some sepultura with that setup than your thrashing days just aren't meant to be homeboy.......

Re: Thrash metal guitars

Ok, thanks for all sugestions... i would like to have that schecter, but it's too expensive for me yet. one more thing about ltd mh 350 nt. the guitar comes equiped with 81/85 combo pickups, which is the formula of many thrash rhythm players. i think, if i put sometihng hoter in a neck, maybe it will be bright enough for solos too. maybe emg 60, or something else for the neck... any suggestions? but definetly i would put the stock emg 81 in the bridge. something hotter for a neck maybe, is there any better choices to combine with 81 in the bridge? i think, 85 is really strong output humbucker, and it's used in the bridge positions too... is 60 better for soloing?

Re: Thrash metal guitars

you can use the same one guitar for rytem and for soling

if you have a one freind to turn up the knob trebel all the way up when you play a solo

and another frend to turn the up knob the bass up the way up for rytem pyling.

on your amp knobs

Re: Thrash metal guitars

Some players have also been known to use dual EMG 81's - neck and bridge. Not sure who they are though, but I'm sure it's been done before. lol

Re: Thrash metal guitars

everythings been done before.....

Get whichever one you think looks the coolest, that will make you want to pick it up more....

Having said that, the Jackson has a compound radius fretboard whick most people either love or hate, but mostly people just love it because it promotes fast soloing AND great chording....

The jackson might be a hair lighter on the shoulders... being its mostly alder.

Both guitars are shred-tastic!

The EMG's vs. the Duncans is a matter f personal choice. Although many bands use the 81-85 combo, I have never been able to really LOVE the EMG tones.... I can flat get after the Duncan tones though, more versatie IMHO. of course.

watch this keeping in mind its the newer emgX which does not come in the LTD

either guitar will get you there with speed and style.... just a matter of choice.
