Throwing some specs around for a high gain, low wattage practice amp

Pierre

Stratologist
2 12AX7s for gain stages
1 12AX7 or similar for cathodyne PI
Pentode/Triode switch for 'half power'
SS rectifier

Now the main problem in what I have in mind is: one or two power tubes, that is the question.
With 2, I'd get less noise out of it, but most likely too much power. With a single, I'd have more options.
One 6L6 for bigger headroom
One EL34 for less headroom
One 6V6 or EL84 for early breakup and less output
That's just the basic outline. I'm just a stupidly hurried dude who has no idea, for instance, of just how much preamplification a single powertube can take.
Another thing I'm hesitating is between a cathode bias or fixed bias powertube/tubes. I'm aware that most of it may depend on whether I make it single ended or push pull though.
My goal would be for a JCM800 gain level on a 5W tube amp. It's doable, Ibanez did it, but I haven't yet opened the whole thing to check out how it was done. The chassis is only opened on the sides so it's not easy to check it all out.

So the main concerns right now would be:
2 little power tubes?
1 little power tube?
1 big bottle?

Pros of push pull = less noise I believe, and more headroom.
Pros of single tube = less power, earlier breakup. And simpler circuitry of course.
Any basic design help (or correction in case I made wrong assumptions, I'm still a noob after all :D ) is welcome :) thanks

Alright... with some help from HC I was advised to go with a single tube and no PI, cathode biased. This will make things way easier. And I just realized that AX84 already has some schematics for similar projects, so I'll base it on that.
