Thunderbird Fans

Re: Thunderbird Fans

My neck-thru T-bird came with passive Gibson mini-HB's. I'm really liking them so far, no plans to change. For different tones, I've got a few other basses.

Hmm, I think I will have to go and play some of these plugged in and see how they sound. Thanks!

This guy builds full custom "Fender Bird" basses. I'd love to have one, but I'd have to sell one of my kids or a kidney or something.
If you like the "non-reverse" Thunderbirds, these guys http://kneguitars.com/rad_bod.php make bodies in several kinds of wood. I actually had one of these, but had to sell it before I could build it out.

Re: Thunderbird Fans

Wow...for those prices I'd just assume get a real Gibson...but maybe someone else would like his basses better...

Re: Thunderbird Fans

I love my T-bird, it plays and sound fantastic! I paid a grand for it a few years back, with the case still mint

Re: Thunderbird Fans

Anyone tried the Eastwood Stormbird bass? Third party YT video demonstrations suggest that the instrument has some of the non-reverse 'bird vibe but none of the sound.

Re: Thunderbird Fans

Ah yes, Thunderbirds. Big fan here.

Quality aged wood, big strings, necks in proportion, throaty but smooth voices. They smoke (and drink). Lady Penelope is my favourite.

Re: Thunderbird Fans

I have an Epiphone Thunderbird and have used it for various shows live. I dig it so much, that I put it in the shop yesterday for a pro setup.

my complaints on it are that it is heavy and when sitting down to play the angles hit your ribs.

Re: Thunderbird Fans

Any Thunderbird fans out there? I really like them, the pinnacle of Gibson's basses. (...)Well-designed instrument.
They are great, but I wouldn't say "pinnacle".

LP basses don't seem to be big sellers (I don't remember ever seeing anyone play one on stage, or one in a store); I don't think they're all that popular with bassists. I think Thunderbirds have probably outsold any other Gibson bass (maybe outsold all other Gibson basses combined), which makes sense, as they put more thought into them. Gibson tends to make their basses for guitarists by mostly using short scales, and for some unknown reason putting HB's (especially huge HB's) right next to the fretboard. That and the short scales make muddiness all too common. Fender led the way with long scales and PU's in the bridge and middle position only, and blew away everyone else for decades. Leo made two great basses designed to meet bass player's demanding needs. Gibson followed Fender's lead with the Thunderbird, and created their best bass, one of the all-time great basses. Like Precision's and Jazz's, Thunderbirds are well-designed and made for bass players (not guitarists), qualities difficult to find in other Gibson basses. I stand by the statement, 'the pinnacle of Gibson basses.'
