More updates again!

I've installed a pair of early 60's Sprague Black Beauty caps in Thursday Burst today. And the guitar SMOKES! Damn good improvement in tone. That sweet note bloom is to die for, I'm telling you! :laugh2: ;)

I've also done some more aging and dinged the plastic parts up a little more.

Damn you! Why do you keep makin' that thing prettier?

Re: Thursday Burst. Early 60's Sprague Black Beauty caps added!

Man, that's looking great! The subtle aging like that is what I like the best when people are doing it intentionally to their guitars. It gives it that "I took care of it, but it's really old" kind of look.

Is that actual cracking of the finish on the headstock or does it just look that way? If so did you do it yourself?

Re: Thursday Burst. Early 60's Sprague Black Beauty caps added!

I have the same caps in my lp. Old mylar caps like that tend to drift up a little bit, but I think mine are well below .022 which suits my tastes better.

I can't compare and contrast too much though, I didn't have .022s in there for too long and I also changed over to '50s wiring all at the same time, so who knows where the tone comes from.

Re: Thursday Burst. Early 60's Sprague Black Beauty caps added!

Closed Eye, it's bacause I know you want to see it :laugh2: lol... Thanks!

Thx JacksonMIA, it's exactly that "I took care of it, but it's really old" look that I'm going for! The headstock is artifically aged, the cracks are scratched into the finish with a thin needle.

It's poly finished, not nitro and according to what people say poly won't crack as nitro does. So I figured I had to do it the needle way ;)

firebirdVII, yep changing to the 50's wiring changes things quite alot on it's own so hard to tell then how much improvment if you do it on the same time. Lots of discussion around caps all over the net it seems. And as I wrote on the page, it's up to each to decide wheter they hear a different and wheter they think it's just placebo tone improvment. I can only hear it with my own ears in my guitar, and I wouldn't want to change back to the Orange Drops.

The .027/.015 combination works great in my guitar... even better than I though, it balances everything very well!

Site is down... it's the company that hosts it seems to have some problem. It was up a couple of hours ago so they may just be doing some service or something!

Check back later! :)

sounds super cool. is it a plain top cherry burst lp by chance? cause that would be sweet!

Re: Thursday Burst. Early 60's Sprague Black Beauty caps added!

That "bloom" thing wasn't there with the Orange Drops. First of, the tone and volume pots react different, in a better way imo. That also changed beacuse of the values are different on these compared to the Orange Drops which both were .022mf's.

Hard do explain in words, but I notice it when I play. But for and example when you play a chord then hammer on a pinch harmonic into a note it blooms soo beautifully. Didn't happen the same way when I had the Orange Drops installed.

It's a Violin Burst, not as red as a Cherry Burst. Color almost looks a little like a old Cherry Burst that has lost a lil of it's red tone :smokin:

How about a new blues recording for us?! :) :)

Re: Thursday Burst. Early 60's Sprague Black Beauty caps added!

Your wish is my... :laugh2:

I'll see what I can do, maybe later this week or in the weekend. I'll record something as soon as I have time :smokin:

I can make a notation both here and in the Tips & Clips forum when it's up :D

Here's the blues that fingerace requested even faster than I promised! ;)

I switched through all positions and played with the volume and tone knobs so you can hear more of the sound possiblities and tones than just one position through the whole track. It messed up my playing in some places because I'm not really used to do that yet.

Hope you enjoy it, that would also be others than fingerace! :D

Cheers

oh my god that guitar is everything i've ever wanted in a lp. i've never liked the flame burst or quilt bursts. but i've always LOVED the plain top bursts. that lp is perfect. i want one!

it sounds wonderful, perfect even. how did this happen without me noticing? i love this guitar

great job on everything, you're a genius!

Re: Thursday Burst. Early 60's Sprague Black Beauty caps added!

It's not a plaintop. The flame is subtle but it's there.

Thanks for typing what I just failed to read the first time. :smack:

It looks pretty realistic. I've got a 67 Gibson acoustic that has checked like that (actually over the whole body), and they look really similar. Did you read how to do that or did you come up with it on your own? I guess that actually applies to all of the relic-ing you did. I always like to hear about some of the crazy ideas people come up with to relic parts.

Re: Thursday Burst. Early 60's Sprague Black Beauty caps added!

Great job, and thanks for making the web page. Relicing is fun. Some people think it's horrible to purposely damage a guitar, but what you did isn't damage, it's artwork. I think of it like art restoration, where artisans fix old paintings by matching the aged look. My boss is the US's biggest collector of priceless coin operated machines from the last century. He has a person he pays to restore old machines, by matching flaked paint, creating new linkage that's rusty and old, and replacing glass with new glass that's aged with acid. Same concept.
