Listening to YT soundclips, I can tell you that the DD is not the direction I'm heading. I found the Ardrich to be more dynamic. I've had both pickups in various guitars at some point, but its been a while. I remember the suhr having tons of top end, but that was it. But in clips, it does seem to have JB-esque singing high-mids. I also took a look at the BKP Rebel Yells and they're also not the direction I'm headed, but I've heard them get recommended before as JB-esque.


I've done mag swaps before. I've done the JB8, JB2, Custom Custom with A2,5, A8 and ceramic mags. The CC8 for example, could sound cool, but it had too much output which compromised pretty much everything and dynamics just weren't there. The JB2 I didn't like. I'm no expert, but the A2 magnet took away those great upper mids and replaced them with lower mids (I can dial in the lower mids on my amps). The JB8 was more of the same, and had more output. I've done the the ceramic swap into a JB before and it actually was more DD-esque than I wanted. I was actually going to experiment with a Demon 8 in the future. The demon is my favourite duncan pickup. I've never done a pole swap. While I have some idea how different magnets affect tonality, I have no clue about poles??? Where do I get said pole pieces?

Am I just better off contacting the Duncan Custom Shop?

One thing I have found in particular with A8 mag pickups is how critical distance from the strings are. To close really screws with the harmonics and sustain + makes an A8 pickup sound really harsh. I have found that the A8 pickups sound best a little lower from the strings than any other pickups I have used. The Alt 8 to me has a lot of that JB singing mid but is just a lot bigger and rounder sounding. Amp and guitar however have such an impact what I have seen might be different than your experience.

the custom, custom custom and custom 5 are the same pup with different magnets. sh5 custom = ceramic, sh11 custom custom = alnico 2, sh14 custom 5 = alnico 5. so a cc with a5 = c5. a cc with ceramic = custom

And the Full Shred is two Custom screw coils loaded with short hex screws and a polished A5.

My question was somewhat rhetorical. ;)

The closest pick up I've found is actually not and SD but a Motor City. The Afwayu retains the singing, sparkly leads but is tight and aggressive on the bottom without being too dry. Not surprising really, since Cantrell uses this pick up and he was a JB user.

I've got a Cantrell Superhawk with a JB in the bridge and it SCREAMS. By far, my favourite JB loaded guitar. I think the maple body lends its self well to this pickup. I get lots of high mids, and maple seems to give me a tighter bottom end than alder. Alder sometimes gives the JB more top end. 10 years ago, I had a Jackson DK2M with a JB and it was a screamer!. I want that tone- a combo of both. The pickup will be going into one of my alder charvel's. want the tight bottom end of maple, the hugh singing/ sweet upper mids and some extra high end cut. The JB had too much low mids in the charvel w/o enough top end bite. Doing the ceramic (dokkenbucker) mag-swap. it got the bite but lost the sweetness that makes a JB a JB.

I have a stock JB in a Jackson DXMG with the licensed FR. This thing is 80's metal all the way.
Oh, but so is my Schecter Blackjack, string through, set neck, with an RCUOA5 JB.

So...

I looked into MCP. I was mostly interested in the Angel Dust. I sent wade an email and haven't heard back from him. Its so weird. Conventional wisdom says that if I want a hot tone, I look for overwound pickups that pack a punch. But the more I look, that's not always the case. Meanwhile, I took a chance and got a Dean Baker Act. It sounds like it should be a little tighter and JB-esque. And if I can get shorter screws, I'll swap those in. I'm also kicking around the idea of an A3 or A5 RTM with hex screws from the custom shop in case the DMT doesn't work.

according to people from the forum like masta c the tyrant is the closest thing to a jb made by dean, not even the baker act is so jb-ish as the tyrant, as it pretty much is a jb with nickel hex caps, yup nickel not oxide steel like on the invader


that guitar is mahogany on neck and body, for a jb that would be a recipe for disaster, yet the tyrant keept tight on it

i know, i know that vid is 7 years old but eric is kinda cool and all his demos have little to none audio processing which is great to hear what the pickups can do without studio magic

but the invader wind is more similar to the wind of the distortion than to the wind of the jb, + the 3 double thick ceramic mags, the tyrant has a normal thicknes A5 mag

also i tought SGates' invaders hex caps were the same alloy as the regular invader hex caps, just nickel plated, while the tyrant hex caps are supposedly (no info on that from Dean guitars but i remember reading so on the forum) the same alloy as regular pickup nickel screws so that migh also make a difference

anyway the only tighter JB i can think of without going custom shop is the DMY Tyrant

Short Polepieces is for sure the way to go, if you want to keep the voicing of the pickup the same and just tighten up the dynamics and brighten up the top end. Thats what makes the Omega, Screamin Demon, ETC. really tight is the hex screws (theyre shorter underneith). You will be asstonished at how much the shorter polepieces make a difference.
