Tighter JB?

Re: Tighter JB?

Short hex poles on both coils will do what you want, and will make the pickup somewhat similar to the old dimarzio double whammy. You would have to find a threaded keeper for the slug side though, other wise you would have to partially fill than drill out the bobbin.

Other things you can do. you can shave off low end passively by just installing a capacitor in series with the volume pot. This way you can control the frequency of the roll off. The reduction in low frequency response will make the pickup seem brighter over all.

Re: Tighter JB?

Save money: buy a second JB used and make your own.

Give me the slug coils for my various hybrid projects.

Don't sweat the hex screws, just cut the stock screws. That way you can adjust the lengths on a per-string, per-coil basis.

So...

I bought a JB TB, Ordered a bunch of mags- C8, A8 A2, RCA5. I'm thinking either the rough cast A5 or the Ceramic will go into the PU. Ordered Hex screws. How Do I cut the screws exactly?

Why do you need to cut the screws if you have already shorter hex screws any way?

But bolt or wire cutters will work.

Re: Tighter JB?

As the story goes, I had two Charvels and both needed new bridge pickups. One had a Gravity Storm which was WAY too bright and the other had a tone zone which could be amazing about 10% of the time and the rest of the time it was just way too fuzzy. And I have a JB in an all-maple G&L that sounds AMAZing and I wanted that tone in my other guitars. A tighter JB with the same cool mid spike and soaring highs that never got harsh.

Initially, I got a Dean Baker act, but it wouldn't fit into one of my guitars (Charvel decided to drill the pickup cavity too narrow) and the Dean pickup was too big for the cavity. So I put it in the other guitar.

I ordered a JB with the intent to modify it with different mags and shorter hex screws. The heads of the hex screws turned out to be too large in diameter to fit into the JB. Out of frustration, I ordered a Dimarzio FRED (always been interested in that one). So the FRED is on order.

As for the DMT Baker Act-

I just got it wired up and its a VERY LOUD pickup that shreds and shreds and shreds. It doesn't clean up well. It has slightly less upper mids than the JB. Not scooped sounding at all. I think its a one trick pony and it does that trick very well. More suited to metal than any other genre. Classic rock didn't work well. Bass is tight. Its got soaring high end. It might have a tick too much hair on the highs. It overpowers the neck pickup, a Dimarzio Area 67'. Single note runs were a breeze and there's enough bass response that a neck pickup really isn't needed. I'll have more comments when I've played it more. These are my initial impressions after 30 mins of playing.

Re: Tighter JB?

The Baker Act sounds right up my alley. How does it compare to my Duncan Distortion? I fiqure its between that or a D activator.

The DD is lean and mean. The Baker act is more in your face. Its got sort of the top end slice that the JB has but some of the body from a Super Distortion (but doesn't sound muffled which some Super Distortions can sound like).

more notes
It really doesn't clean up well. Playing with the volume knob did nothing. The pickup is pretty much has two settings a "BRUTAL ASSAULT BLASTING OFF ON FIRE SHRED YOUR FACE OFF" and "off".
It lacks feel. Its sooooo hot and just lacks feel
It does record pretty damn well. I made a little iPhone clip and it sounds good, towords the end of the clip I tried to roll off the volume and it sounds a little lame, which is true to the pickup

its also super good as a pickup of hearing the individual notes. The strings really ring out. In some situations it sounds more compressed than a jb and in others it doesn't. There seems to be more "roundness" to the notes. They still slice out of the top end but not to sound harsh. The baker act is very good for soloing.
