TIME FOR A NEW AMP!

Hey guys, after having to sell my Peavey 3120 halfstack last year, I'm ready to recover and buy something new! I just bought a nice 4x12 Ampeg cab. So I just need a head. I'm considering a Laney IRT60, or maybe even trying out a Bugera Infinium series. I play a variety of music but metal will be the main focus here...so high gain is essential :D I'm looking to spend a MAX of $700...any thoughts are appreciated.

Re: TIME FOR A NEW AMP!

The best 700 dollar amp is a used 1200 dollar amp... A 5150 or XXX or something would fill the bill nicely.

Re: TIME FOR A NEW AMP!

I love Laney amps but when it comes to getting a good amp, if you can find a great working used amp it's probably the most bang for your buck. A used 5150 would blow your mind for $700. Listen to Edgecrusher on this one.

For sure. I know the 5150's are pretty solid. I don't care for the XXX though. I tried out a used one last week and didn't really like it.

The only thing I have found within a 2 hour drive of where I am is a used EVH 5150III 50watt head. http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/msg/4970833851.html -going for $650. Seems like a pretty solid deal...? I'm still gonna keep shopping for a couple more days of course though...

Re: TIME FOR A NEW AMP!

That a pretty good deal, i got my 6534+ for around 700 ish used... the 5150 3 has a better clean channel than my 6534+

Yea, When I went up to vegas I looked for the same ad again to grab the phone number for that used head. But it was no longer there. So I just got a Laney IRT120H shipped to me. Played through it for about a solid day and honestly....I was disappointed. It's very thin sounding. So i'll probably send it back and just buy a new 5150III 50watt instead...since I cant find any used ones..

Peavey renamed the XXX the 3120 and changed the stock power amp tubes to EL34s. It was either the power amp tubes or the cabinet that you didn't like. :D

yea...that and the fact they added another 12ax7 and put totally different transistors in the 3120...but yea totally the same thing :?: lol

Re: TIME FOR A NEW AMP!

Has anybody mentioned Hovercraft yet? Get something custom made for your money.

Thats honestly not a bad idea! But I took a look at the prices, they're a little more than I want to spend. I know...It's always worth having something custom made. Maybe some day for me.

That's odd. Last I knew both used 4 12ax7s and even the 3120 manual has the signal block diagram from the XXX. (Has the controls labeled as bottom, body, hair.)

Yeah not sure where you heard this but its wrong... the changes beyond the EL34's were all cosmetic. No transistors nothin.

Re: TIME FOR A NEW AMP!

Im gonna be honest with you, my 6534+ is pretty garbage sounding, but its in for a retube so it should sound crushing when i get it back from a tech, the clean channel was also horrible and i dont think it will sound better with new tubes (i bought the amp used) i think you will be much happier with the 5150 3, ive heard it has really great cleans overall... and well the drive channel should be brutal!

Doesnt the XXX only have 3 12ax7's ?? I know the 3120 has 4. But when I compared my 3120 to a XXX the 3120 sounded waaaay better. More gain saturation too.

Re: TIME FOR A NEW AMP!

sounded better to me anway. I should say that the 3120 sounded meaner and was full of "oomph"....yea thats a good way to describe it haha!

That's why I posted the picture of the XXX with the see-through faceplate, you can see all 4 12ax7s.

The 3120 is a direct replacement for the XXX.
The XXX 2 is a direct replacement for the JSX.

Lots of threads online with comparisons and everyone comes to the same conclusions.

It really must have been the tubes or the cabinet that you didn't like. :D

ugh I see the other preamp tube....my bad! lol. I guess it could've been the tubes. It was a used one with 6L6's in it. who knows how old those tubes were also.

Yea, I tried out the 5150III at guitarcenter in Vegas. I liked it a lot. But I wasnt gonna pay full price for a display model that was played through probably hundreds of time and that has been sitting outta the box for months and months. But I have a "open box" model on the way to me. should be here in like a week and a half. I ended up exchanging the Ironheart for it lol

:D
A while back, I saw a XXX head for sale in my local Sam Ash for small money. Alas, at the time I did not have it.
