Time For Me To Get Off My Ass!! Tung Oil? Tru Oil?

Ok, I'm going to get off of my ass and finish these damn things!! I've got a crap ton of nitro to spray on these bodies, but I just don't feel like going that route. Can I use Tung Oil or Tru Oil to finish these? Will that make the bodies hard? Will that make the dyes that I used on them bleed? I will be doing the entire bodies over the binding and everything. I know absolutely nothing about any of this!!

I don't want any type of tint on them. I just want them to be finished, and be nice and shiny!! Please help an absolute moron that knows nothing about finishing guitars.

Also, what bridge do I need to buy? Size? I know it'll be a tune o matic or whatever. Also, do tune o matics need a neck at a certain radius?

TruOil is far better than Tung oil. It dries harder, dries faster and builds up to a nice gloss naturally. It's more durable and easy to fix nicks/dings.

I'm sure someone will chime in about using a wipe-on poly of some kind, but I really like TruOil and have seen some NICE looking bodies finished in it!

By the way, that flame-top purple Iceman is friggin' awesome and then some!

I have a tip jols do it in a area where there wont be cat hair flying around.

Wipe on poly is a pita. I did my Ibby with it. If I had it to do over, I'd use Tru-Oil.

I won't. Cat hair don't fly around in here anyways. I'll probably do it out in the garage.

I can't help with the question, but I'm hella excited to see these ****ers put together.

Please buy good necks with Ibanez headstocks, not banana or Jackson types.

Keep those things authentic looking.

lol....I'll be getting Warmoth necks with the reverse Warhead headstock. I personally think the reverse Warhead goes along nicely with the Iceman body shape. They somewhat share the same lines.

Anybody want to photoshop those two together for me? I just dragged the neck up to the body and it looked pretty cool.

Man don't tru oil that body, don't get me wrong I use tru oil a lot for finishing, but that body deserves a good nitro finish. Save the tru oil for the neck. Sure it's alot more work but it will be well worth it in the end.

I tru-oil every neck I have. It's SUPER easy to apply, (I use coffee filters, it kind of buffs it flat as you apply it, plus a pack of them is like $2 for 50) it dries hard and clear, it's durable and I've never had it affect (or not stick to) tinted or stained wood. 2-3 coats will seal it, and just go up from there, for the more glossy you want it. Oh, and you can buff it out with a piece of old, worn denim if you don't have buffing gear. Although "Scratch-X" works pretty good, too. They do make spray on Tru-oil, but I didn't like it as much as the wipe-on kind. Oh yeah, the Tru oil won't ever be "soft" or sticky like Nitro can be sometimes. It feels smooth and awesome on necks, and the one body I did with it doesn't seem to collect finger prints like Poly does, either. I bought 2 of the little bottles of oil in 2010 and I haven't used them both up yet, it goes a long way.

Oh yeah, when you open it, don't take the seal off the top of the bottle, just poke a hole in it. The oil can "skin over" from just the air in the bottle, making a tiny hole, and then putting plastic wrap or a glove or something over it before closing it back up can make your bottle last longer.

I should add that I oiled the wood shifter in the car, all our wood handled kitchen utensils and my grill tool handles, and they've all held up really well. Tru-oil is some great stuff.
