Its time to snag some of these rack mount power amps. What great value! IM consistently amazed at some of the great prices on these rackmount tube power amps now that rackmount is out of fashion.

Re: Time to snag the Rack mount tube power amps

Which ones are you looking into?

I used to have a Marshall 9200 and really liked it...it was heavy (and LOUD!) but I dug it...

Re: Time to snag the Rack mount tube power amps

Im only familair with the budget Peaveys, although I've heard about the Mesa's and the Marshalls. For 200.00 -300.00, Im thinking the Peavey power amps simply cannot be beat for value.
They simply do not make power amps like that anymore for anywhere near that price.
I was going to sell my peavey, then I remembered I needede a Home thetare amp. I hooked the Peavey( Clasic mono 60) upto my TV and then to my JBL speakers and now I have one of the best sounding hoem theatres around, although it only gets moderatly( but satsoifyingly) loud using the TV as pre-amp.
Its a Tube amp. They arent made any longer. they are cheap and they are darn good.

Re: Time to snag the Rack mount tube power amps

I use a Classic 50/50 for my band/live rig. I love it.

Re: Time to snag the Rack mount tube power amps

i'd love to try a stereo tube power amp and use it with the pre out of my 5150.... set it up like EVH's mid 90's live rig... except in my case the stereo amps speakers would have to be 1x12's!!!

Re: Time to snag the Rack mount tube power amps

I have a stereo Marshall EL84 20/20 1U Power amp in my rack. I've never needed to put it to more than 1/2 volume, and it sounds great.

You like that one??

I really wanted to find one of these when I was still running a rack rig...the 9200 was great but 100 watts A SIDE was just crazy...I ran that wiht a pair of 2x12's and the volume was just too much!

I like it so far :)

It's the only rack power amp I've used to be honest, and I mainly got it because 100ww or 50w a side would be too much, whereas this 20w a side is just about right.

I really like how the amps EL84s work with clean patches from my pre-amp and FX unit (Marshall JMP1 and TC Electronic G-Major) but am still trying to tweak the settings for any distorted sounds that are anything more than a 'crunch' setting.

I got a Classic 120/120 about a year ago for those same reasons. I am very happy with it. Just make sure the seller packs it extremely well. They (Peavey) are heavy and do not have the kind of construction that a Mesa has. If it gets dropped, it will work just fine but look like a Yugo that got hit by a semi.

Mine got dropped and it was packed well, I had to get out a handfull of tools to get get it back in shape. I got it cheap, so I wasn't too concerned, just a little disappointed.

Re: Time to snag the Rack mount tube power amps

I have a Marshall 9100 50/50 poweramp I used when I did a full rack......it's great but man is it heavy! If I go back to a rack setup I'm planning on finding a Mesa 20/20.

Are they? So in the studio I'm an old-fashioned guy then :)

I have a prototype HACKMAN 2x50W power amp (Diezel VH4S with Dagnalls and some mods). I just love it. You just plug in anything (from Gainiac to TriAxis) and BADABANG - massacre time :smoker:

I looked for a MESA 20/20 myself, but it's speaker outputs were the wrong Impedance/Ohmage to match any of the cabs I have.

From what I hear, they're great sounding amps and very well built.

Re: Time to snag the Rack mount tube power amps

Anyone use the Sonus blue tube?
I am considering one to add to my MG 100 along with a EQ.

Re: Time to snag the Rack mount tube power amps

I'm still debating between which poweramp to use for my TGP-3 or just building my own. Truth be told, I dislike racks and rack gear cause soo 80's, but running the TGP-3 into an AC30 is quite sacrilidge... beatiful, sweet, sacrilidge.
