Tiny Terror VS. 5150

I read (a few weeks ago now) in the OrangeForum, that an owner of both Orange Tiny Terror & Peavey 5150 MKII, is stating that the lil Tiny Terror has more gain than his BIG 100W 5150 !!!

Not saying he is full of BS, but can that be ???

Both amps have a 'Master vol, or seperate Gain knob', so vol. is not all that important in this case.

He is mearly stating that when he max the gain knob on the Tiny Terror, it has more gain, than the 5150, with it's gain knob maxed !!!

Has anyone AB'd them before ?

Any thoughts ?

Why would that be hard to believe?

Gain has nothing to do with available wattage - gain comes from the preamp. Not only that, but the Tiny Terror could be capable of even more distortion (at least at realistic volume levels) due to the greater ease of overdriving a 15-watt power stage compared to a 100-watt one.

Seems totally feasible to me.

Yes, i know that vol. has nothing to do with gain - i jst said that, because i (...sadly) know some guys think vol. is directly related to gain - idiots !!!

It is just that the idea that i got from the Orange Marketing side of things, it is not advertized as a "Metal" HIGH GAIN amp.

If you say "Modern Metal", one of the first amps that come to mind is the 5150. Maybe it is just me, but i have always thought of the Orange range AD & Rocker series, as more of a Classic Rock type amp, w. a looser bottom-end, not an uBER-tight metal like tone.

And most Classic Rock tones to my ears are not all that hi-gain !

Is this lil' wonder marketed incorrectly then ?

I haven't played it, but I've played some oranges and seen people use them live. It probably has a fair amount of Stoner Metal gain, which could also double as a hot-rodded classic rock sound. But as far as having as much as a 5150 to get a tight metal sound, I have my doubts. Slap a pedal in front of it (oh no, not a pedal! Run for your lives!!!) I'm sure it could do about anything.

This thread = a bunch of guys making assumptions to back up their disagreement w/ someone who has actually PLAYED and COMPARED both amps.

That's silliness!

I have owned a 5150 combo and I now currently own a TT. Whoever said a TT has more gain than a 5150 is out of their mind.

Maybe he's not out of his mind, maybe he was able to crank the Tiny Terror and his big mean Peavey had to stay at 2.

and I use my Bassman for metal and it sounds fine...so I'm sure the Orange could handle it.

Doesnt matter. When you think of a TT think AC/DC crunch. Hit it with a boost and it goes over the top more, but nothing like I remember my old 5150 being!!!

That is what i thought too . . . ohhh, well, i will be playing with one soon enough, and i will compare them to my cousins 5150 combo & Peavey ValveKing first hand !

It probably has more muddy fizz with the gain knob cranked, but I'm 100% sure it's not actually more usable gain than a 5150.

ugh who in their right minds would want more? The original 5150 has quite a bit more gain than the 5150 II also. On my regular 5150 i leave the lead gain at "2"
or sometimes "3" out of 10 and i play metal on the lead!

Having the gain knob below 5 on mine makes it very very very thin. All the knobs like hovering around 5-6, there must be some reason.

Your 6505+? you mean? That cab is horrible you may want to try some other speakers, like a mix of v30s and g12t-75s. I'm not a real big fan of the 6505+ or 5150 II. I love the original 5150 and the regular 6505. I had a 6505+ a while back and recently owned the 5150 II and 5150 at the same time and the 5150 really blew the 5150 II away IMO

Depends on the tone you want, I like the 5150II and 6505+ far better than the normal models...

And the cab/speakers are exactly what I'm looking for...

I assure you, they are anything but muddy and fizzy. Certainly less so than a 5150
