Tips about delay

ive always liked the delay sounds, but i never seem to be able to play a delay as it deserves... its like i cant find the sweet spot for it

(ive found trough experimenting that playing trough a delay is a totally new way of approaching the instrument IMHO)

so can you guys give me some tips on working some delay grooves?

currently i have a stereo memory man to play with.

thanks!

Re: Tips about delay

for spacey set the time fairly high so the delay spacing is high-ish and set the feedback up a lot. and mix the delay in a fair amount so that you can hear it but it doesn't muddy up the sound

delay can be really good for fattening it up if you set the time pretty short, then set the repeats medium and hardly mix it in at all. if you want slap-back delay then you should turn up the mix.

those are the two settings that i use

Re: Tips about delay

oh yeah, and for that first setting, let the delay time set the tempo, not you

Re: Tips about delay

I make music usually that is set to an exact tempo so it's easy for me to try different delays like dotted quarter notes synced to the beat. I think either the delay dictates your stroke, so to speak, or your stroke dictates the delay you can use.

If you're playing in a band then the delay will set the tempo of the tune for the others to follow.

Re: Tips about delay

Be careful when setting the volume for the delay. I've come to realize that what may sound good when I let it ring out overpowers some of my palm mutes... Unless, of course, that is what you want.

If you want a nice echo on each of your notes, set your delay to no more than about 800ms. Keep the tempo of the delay (if you have tap tempo) at about the same speed you're playing.

If you want to play a riff and play over it's echo/delay, set your delay over 1000ms.

If you want to thicken your notes, keep your delay at a maximum of 200ms and keep the feedback minimal.

I'm talking from the point of view of a Boss DD series user, so it may not be totally true for a memory man user. But, I'd like to hear how these tips work out for you!:headbang:

yeah, i'm running a Dano PB&J which is a VERY surprisingly good pedal. the only complaint you'll hear out of me is about the piece of garbage they call the buffer.

people often complain about plastic enclosures but i wonder if they realize that plastic can be stronger than metal...
