In my experience closed-back 1x12s have a tendency to sound boxy, particularly as you increase the volume. I'm not saying they all sound that way, but I generally prefer the sound of a 2x12. I don't think a 2x12 is overkill for playing at home and if you ever want to play unmic'd down the pub it will have a better spread than a 1x12!

As d1dsj says the older Marshall 1936 2x12 cabs are ply. I have a JCM800 1936 I bought on eBay for £90 and it's a great cab. You might have to wait a while for the right one to come along but now does seem to be a good time to be a buyer.

Roadkill cabs are really solid.

I get all of my cabinet work done by them since coming across them.

Theyre all made with finger jointed void free birch ply with solid pine bracing.

One great thing about Roadkill that I've found is they are completely willing to go the extra mile to get you exactly what you want add to that the complete customisation and you have a winner.

I'd shoot Tom an email and discuss exactly what you are wanting tonally and see what happens.

I have a JCM800 1936 I bought on eBay for £90 and it's a great cab.

Thanks for the advice. They do seem like a cool company.

I'll be out of the country next week and if I decide to go this route I'll have to find something else to sell (I'm really pushing my budget as it is) but I'll probably fire him off a quick Email when I get back.
