In my experience closed-back 1x12s have a tendency to sound boxy, particularly as you increase the volume. I'm not saying they all sound that way, but I generally prefer the sound of a 2x12. I don't think a 2x12 is overkill for playing at home and if you ever want to play unmic'd down the pub it will have a better spread than a 1x12!
As d1dsj says the older Marshall 1936 2x12 cabs are ply. I have a JCM800 1936 I bought on eBay for £90 and it's a great cab. You might have to wait a while for the right one to come along but now does seem to be a good time to be a buyer.
