Sounds like bright strings, stainless strings, played with a pick, into a pretty gritty tube amp, and a cab with a tweeter :)

Scooped midrange, atleast.

By the way, i think that you'd be better off with a brigther\more modern sounding bass than the Esp "EB" bass you've been thinking of, for getting this type of tone.

Mahagony basses tends to be very mid heavy, and smoother sounding. I'd recommend an alder\ash\walnut bass instead, since they usually have a tighter\brighter tone.

A MM-style pickup would be perfect for the tone you're looking at, though. They are usually pretty gritty and bright, with lots of lows! :)

actually in these clips dude was using a bass made of white ash, seymour duncan jazz pickups, and of course he played with a pick. :]
but thanks a lot for the info Erland, i guess i'll try find myself something with the mentioned specs...
