Tips on palm mute galloping?

You know, like Metallica "Battery" type palm muting. I find I can't pull it off without a strong attack and have to use my wrist tremendously to get it done. I'd like to do this more relaxed (thus, cleaner). Any tips?

Re: Tips on palm mute galloping?

don't use your wrist. Wrist should stay not locked up, but fairly close to stationary. use your fingers for the movement. Obviously, palm mute needs to be there, but don't go overboard and dig into the strings, just mute them enough to get that palm muted sound.

Not nipple-riding also helps your picking hand play faster. Playing james hetfield low might be going too far, I don't know how he does it, but yeah, wear your guitar at waist level or so, and you should be fine.

and lastly, practice practice practice. If you're not used to metal riffing, the gallop can be a bit of a hurdle, but practicing diligently will get you over it :)

Re: Tips on palm mute galloping?

I always do it with my wrist pretty tight and moving my arm from the elbow.

Re: Tips on palm mute galloping?

i keep my wrist relatively relaxed and use my whole arm to swing my hand back and forth, but in a controlled sort of way where my hand isn't flapping back and forth.

Re: Tips on palm mute galloping?

christ...don't use your whole arm astro...that's a recipe for a repetitive stress injury.

that goes for superrad and godrex too. better technique = less pain

wrist and thumb for me. i was weaned on this sh1t.
strap adjustment is important too, so you've got the right pick-to-string angle.
ideally, you want to move as little as possible, both for your sake and getting it to sound clean.
also, straight downstrokes always sound better than alternate picking; this is why hetfield sounds like hetfield.
stretch and warm up too dude, or you'll end up with a hell of a headache

Re: Tips on palm mute galloping?

If it's straight chugs, yes downpicking is way awesomer, and you'll get better sounding results faster than if you tried alternate picking them.

can't gallop without alternate picking though.
usually, down up down and repeat

Getting straight up single string alternate picking cleanly I think is harder than gallops. getting each note to sound clear and consistent means you gotta work on your picking technique and your picking speed. Practicing alternate picking with a metronome is great for that.

Re: Tips on palm mute galloping?

Interestingly enough, I started learning to do serious metal riffing with a thick pick, and it's great because of that tremendous definition, but as I started playing faster, more complicated riffs, I realized that thin pointy picks are where it's at. flexibility, and precision, and because I have all that good technique developed from when I used to use thick picks, I find I'm not missing them at all!

Re: Tips on palm mute galloping?

I use a sharp pick too. its about the feel and also having a good ear for the right mix and amount of palm mute, and being meticulously mechanical.

i shouldn't have said whole arm, more like my forearm is moving back and forth to support my hand and wrist moving faster. i think. it's hard for me to explain:dunce:

I sharpen my Jazz IIIs.

Re: Tips on palm mute galloping?

I can't really use thick picks, because my attack is way too hard. I use .60mm and I tend to make the strings buzz as it is. (i dont have low action).

bah - I was playing speed metal when you were in diapers - never had a problem. No Pain - but my right forearm was like Popeye's ;)

That piano part is not going to help with muting and chugging. ;)

my song of choice for a good workout was always Disposable Heroes - - simple enough so you can just focus on the picking aspect. It's a good workout if you can make it through all 8 minutes.

Re: Tips on palm mute galloping?

"Esoteric Surgery" by Gojira is a good modern equivalent to that song from a right-hand-punisher standpoint, BTW

Re: Tips on palm mute galloping?

I stop playing at that point and do a beat box thing. It's pretty convincing.
