To sell or not to sell..

I've had this guitar for quite awhile, and I love it. However, I very rarely play it, and never in a band type setting. It's decidedly a metal guitar, (currently have a set of blackouts in there) and the bands I've been a part of it just doesn't fit. When I play it on my own I do love the feel and the sound it gives me, but I still find myself sticking with les paul types and strat types (shaped anyway).

I've been starting to think that it wouldn't be a terrible idea to get rid of it in order to bring in something that is more likely to receive play time.

Guess what I'm asking you all, is what would you do?

Re: To sell or not to sell..

I don't know man, how much did you spend on the guitar and what do you think you'll get back out of it? I'm kinda in the same boat but I'm keeping mine because it's worth a lot more to me than anyone else? If you're not playing it and can get a decent return on it than sell it, if you're going to end up taking a big hit than keep it for them Metal days....

Re: To sell or not to sell..

I never sell and I have no regrets.

I agree with this^^

I have two regrets... selling an Alvarez Regent 12-string and an Ibanez acoustic bass years ago. Neither were great guitars, but I still wish I'd kept them around... even though I almost never played them. I would say that, unless you have some undeniable reason to get rid of it (like you REALLY need the cash), you should keep it.

Besides, the guitar you linked to is pretty B.A.! :D

Re: To sell or not to sell..

You already have a guitar that feels good to you. You might have to go through a handful to get another one that feels the same. Have you considered just changing the pickups and keeping it?

Re: To sell or not to sell..

I've bought and sold and traded and gained and lost and etc....if the guitar feels right in your hands then keep it. You can change the pickups out for something that will fit your band's needs (I would recommend the Dimebucker set–such a versatile pickup set that handles not only metal but rock and country to even blues etc...)

Its just rare to find one that just feels right...if it does then I would say don't get rid of it.

Re: To sell or not to sell..

I've got 2 or 3 that I don't play much but knowing that I wont get fair value for them, I won't sell them. Last two I sold were Gibsons and between the 2 of them I did a bit better than break even. I wouldn't consider selling unless you think you can get fair value.

Of course, needing money badly in the event that one is spiraling down into the financial sewer would be a different story.

Re: To sell or not to sell..

You already said it just feel good, & you like the sound you get from it.
If you sell it, you'll loose money, & it WILL haunt you.
KEEP IT

Re: To sell or not to sell..

I've thought about changing the pickups yea, but I don't really know what way I want to go. It's all mahogany but it doesn't seem like it follows what other all mahogany guitars sound like. Which I attribute to the fact that this thing is super light. I do know that I don't really wanna do actives. At least not any that I've yet tried. (81 60 85 het set blackouts)

Re: To sell or not to sell..

If you don't really think you will play it much, and you don't have any particular attachment to it, consider selling it to someone who will use it and appreciate it. If you want to change the pickups, the options are endless. When you say it doesn't follow what other mahogany guitars sound like, how so? If it's super light and plays and sounds well, you may indeed want to hang on to it.

Re: To sell or not to sell..

Well I'm comparing a V style guitar to a les paul. There's just a lot less wood in the V it doesn't sound as deep or powerful, which is how I see lp's

Re: To sell or not to sell..

You want deep and powerful, put an Alternative 8 in it. Was playing my mahogany body Ibanez 123 with a bolt on maple neck. Very light guitar but it resonates nice. It has an Alt 8 in the bridge and is one of my deepest, heaviest sounding guitars. Tuned to D standard btw. It is on par with my Shecter, which has a mahogany set neck into a mahogany body with a JB with a double ceramic, in the bridge.

Re: To sell or not to sell..

I once had a King V with Blackouts. It was my only guitar when I was asked to join a Jazz group for school.

Turns out Blackouts are some of the most versatile pickups available.

Re: To sell or not to sell..

My LP Standard was nothing near thick and beefy-toned, and it weighed 9lbs. I have a guitar that is solid mahogany and weighs about like an SG and has plenty of beef, especially with the SD Custom in the bridge.

Vs have as much or more wood as a Les Paul, it's just distributed differently. Body shape influences tone. Vs and Explorers have a bit more of a natural focus on the lows and low-mids than an LP or Strat, but lack the upper-mids and highs of those two shapes.

Re: To sell or not to sell..

so this might be a time to just try a bunch of pickups that I've been looking at but never really went for. Get myself a liberator and have at it haha.
