To Tap or Not To Tap? That is the question.

i think i want an SSL-3 for the bridge of my strat. i noticed that you can get it tapped or not tapped. what does this mean, and what would be the difference in sound between the two?

Re: To Tap or Not To Tap? That is the question.

A tap would allow you to run the pickup, only using a portion of the coil for a more clear, lower output vintage type tone, or you can use the whole thing for a fatter overwound sound, maybe closer to a p90 or something.

Hey Tenniso; Just yesterday, I added the push/pull pot to my Genny to tap my Quarter Pounds.

(Thread here.)

The difference in sound is significant. Its not just a change in output level, but a complete change in the character and tone of the pup. I can't say for certain that a SSL-3 would react this way, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

In the future, if any single-coil pup I choose has the tapped option, I'm going to use it. ;)

Yes...tap! If the option is already there: use it. The tap will usually give you a clearer, glassier, more transparent, more vintage Strat tone. Very useful for rythym especially. Lew

sounds good. can i get a push/pull type tone or volume pot to allow me to tap the pickup? i ask cause i dont want to add another switch to my pickguard, but i guess i would if it were the only way.

also, music123 is selling the ssl-3 in either a tapped or non-tapped version, and there is a price difference of about $8. why would they sell two different versions? dont i do the "tapping" via a switch on my guitar? they make it sound like the factory taps the pickup. what gives?

Push/pull pots can be purchased in many places. Click on the link in my sig, and scroll down to "Parts and Supplies" for a good list.

The factory does tap the pup. A "tap" is achieved by stopping the winding of the pup in the middle of the process, attaching a lead wire, and then continuing with the rest of the wind. Definitely a bit of additional labor and materials involved. ;)

(A "tapped" single-coil will have three wires, instead of two.)

Yup. Its almost like getting two pickups in one, for just a few dollars more.
