To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

My Jaguar has been getting some serious road rash from my last few gigs. I feel Like I entertain by moving so much, but I'm kind of bummed when I find new scratches on my guitar. I can't really decide if I want to cut this crap out and conserve it or say screw it and just use the darn thing.

Am I the only one who feels this way? would you rather give a good show or conserve your instrument?

I think I might end up just buying the Blacktop jaguar so I don't feel bad about bashing my other jaguar so hard.

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

I have 3 guitars for both ends of the spectrum and in between.

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

If its a Fender, yes play the heck out of it. It can handle the abuse and make any rashes, dings, etc look cool. Fenders look too 'sterile' when new. Dings & scratches adds character and makes it yours.

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

I have gigged an American Standard Strat for years, and yeah, it's a little beat, but in general, it has worn very well, and still looks sharp.

What I'm trying to say is that a poly Fender won't ever look too bad, no matter what you do to it.

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

you should buy my black Jaguar because it's almost mint

then you've got one to thrash and one to keep pristine :smokin:

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

Go back through your post, and replace the word "guitar" with "truck", and "Jaguar" with "Ford F-150". Doesn't putting it in this context make the whole concern seem a bit silly?

If you want to play guitar, or drive a truck, and you also want to preserve that guitar or truck, then you have to buy two of them. One you will use as it's intended and designed for, and it will get wear, scratches, rust and dings, and need maintenance to keep it operational. The other you can leave in a case or park in the garage, and only take it out on occasion to admire its pristine originality.

If you're buying a '56 Chevy or '59 Gibson, okay, I can see the appeal in maintaining it for show and preservation. Otherwise, use it, play it, take decent care of it, but don't worry about the inevitable normal wear and beating it may take. That's what they're made for.

I swear to God, if I had the cash, I'd wire it in seconds.

aftermarket pickups included?

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

How 'bout you stop being a girl and play your ****ing guitar the way it was intended, eh?

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

I bought a $2,500.00 Duo Jet, man what a sweet guitar. I polished it more than I played it and wouldn't get near anything or anyone when playing it. I sold it and vowed never to have such a precious guitar again for anything other than home or studio use. Stage guitars should show abuse, just like groupies. :p

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

If you play rock, getting into it and having energy on stage is far more important than making sure your guitar doesn't get scratched. Use a guitar that you won't mind beating up.

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

I just bought a Les Paul, and it gets the same treatment as all my past guitars. I don't beat them out on purpose, and I take care of them, but I don't go out of my way to keep them mint. Wear happens. And yes, there is a difference between abuse and wear.

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

I buy guitars to play, if they get scratches they get scratches.
That said I don't own a premium instrument and I may feel different about throwing a 4k PRS around the way I do my Ibanez.

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

Is the Black Top Jaguar HH made in USA or another country? If it is American made, surely, the smart thing would be to keep the expensive guitar tidy and beat seven shades out of the cheaper one.

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

Play enough and dents happen.

Such is life.

Here's three nice chips on my PRS... on the edge. I know how one got there... not sure about the other two. The back is pretty hammered as well but this things traveled all over the country with me. Love it. My Lester is equally beat up, and I once had a guy in a music store tear into me because I was actually PLAYING a rare guitar. Whudda I care? It sounded and played great so I bought it to use.

Anyone ever break a bone?

Even girls get rough with guitars once in a while.

I'm saving up for a Duo Jet, and I intend to rock the crap outta it: practice, studio, rehearsal, stage, whatever. I don't care if a guitar costs $100 or $5,000. They're meant to be played, not treated like museum pieces.

If you're buying a guitar to look at, go ahead and polish it to your heart's content. If you're buying a guitar to play music with, accept that it will get some wear and tear and play it to your heart's content.

Re: To Thrash And Abuse or Conserve and Protect?

Yeah, dude. Think of it like the tool it is.

You use it to make the $$$ at shows, and make records. When it's too rough, you use some of that $$$ to get another one.

Let's see, who are you playing for? Typical local bar with a bunch of people who've had a lot to drink, most of which will be pretty hazy about what occured that night? Does the room have the usual bad acoustics? It's one thing to beat up a guitar when you're playing for thousands of people under ideal conditions. For an everyday (low paying) bar gig, hmmm...

Do your chops match your slick stage moves? Some guys put emphasis on the strange things. Did the crowd come to watch a gymnist, or hear some good music, or maybe both? To me, the top priority, and by far the most entertaining, is a tight band with great musicians, good arrangements, and an innovative song list. Pros. If you already have all that, then hop around like a jumping bean. If you don't, you may want to rethink things.

Some of us manage to gig on the local level without injuries to our guitars. It can be done. Where I 'cut loose' is on solos; I leave the fancy moves to "Dancing with the Stars.'
