I'm in kind of a unique situation. I own three Les Paul style guitars; a 73' Gibson Deluxe with mini-humbuckers, a late 80's Wine Red Greco Les Paul Custom and a Ibanez-lawsuit era Greco Les Les Paul Custom in ebony.
I'm satisfied with the sound of the 73' Deluxe and the late 80's Wine Red Greco. When the ebony Custom showed up the pickups were micriphonic and I potted them. The guitar was dark sounding to begin with. After the potting they got even darker and I'm not all that crazy about them.
In my eternal Jones for something new I was thinking of going with Phat Cats for the ebony Greco. In my experience Customs to tend to sound darker than the other Les Paul models typically, and this guitar seems to be much the same.
How huge of a factor is the tonal darkness of the instrument when going with P-90's? I'd love to have that great soapbar tone but want to make sure I've got a good candidate for it first.
Thanks...
