Tone Control Wobbling: Ibanez

Hi Fellaws
I have this Ibanez high end RG guitar. It is around 10 months old and the tone control has already started wobbling. What could be the reason? I was reading some suggestions online which involve pulling the knob but the information was half baked.

Could you please throw in some light as to the reasons behind this and how to get rid of it. I have 1 year warranty with american musical. Incase the problem is serious, I would prefer talking to them instead of dealing with it myself.

Cheers

Re: Tone Control Wobbling: Ibanez

Generally speaking the volume and tone controls on a guitar are held in place with a nut and washer, which is covered when the knob on. When one of the controls becomes loose or wobbly then the cause is almost always that the nut is loose. Take the knob off, tighten the nut, replace the knob and it should be fine. If you take the knob off and find that the nut is not loose then check for cracks around the nut.

How do I remove the knob? It seems to be fixed pretty hard to the screw underneath it.

Re: Tone Control Wobbling: Ibanez

Just gently grab it and gently pull up on it. Your going to need to get you fingers kinda under the knob itself.

Re: Tone Control Wobbling: Ibanez

they are pretty tight and pull off
at least the RGs I have do

I have a bent pair of needle nose pliers just for removing these knobs

Re: Tone Control Wobbling: Ibanez

Work the edge of a cloth in under the knob, wrap it around and use that to tug it off. Works easily and it avoids scratching the surface of your guitar.

Re: Tone Control Wobbling: Ibanez

I used the bent tip pliers and a folded polishing cloth to wedge it up

guess the claw of a hammer would work too

be very careful and use very gentle force and a cloth under it if you decide to go this route

Re: Tone Control Wobbling: Ibanez

Will I have any trouble fixing it back? I mean will it fit properly into the slot once I remove it.

Re: Tone Control Wobbling: Ibanez

To remove the knob, assuming it is a push on knob, simply place a cloth under it, and kind of wrap it around the knob, pull to remove.

or, you can use a shoe lace. same principle: get it under the knob, and pull it.

Re: Tone Control Wobbling: Ibanez

look round the knob you dont see a set screw do ya?
