Too Nice To Play????

Does anyone have any gear that seems to be "Too nice to play" ???

It seems I haven't played my Guild very much since getting it. It sits in its' case kind of "outta site-outta mind". I have an Applause acoustic/electric that sits out on a stand...if it falls or if the kids wanna poke & pull on it, no big deal. I usually play it while watching t.v. in the evenings.

Anyway, I was just curious if anyone else does this. I went forever looking for a nice acoustic & now I don't even play it!!!! :smack:

Re: Too Nice To Play????

Nope. They all get played or they get sold.

Re: Too Nice To Play????

OOOO....POST #666 !!!

I hear ya' Lew.....I just need to get over the "It's gonna get scratched!!!" mode & like Guild says, "Meant to be played" !!!!

#667.....I FEEL BETTER NOW !!!

Re: Too Nice To Play????

i dont see the point in buying a guitar thats too nice to play.

then it just becomes a piece of furniture.

i try to keep my stuff as "new" looking as possible but the reality is they all look like they've gone to war :P so long as the necks ding free an axe is in 10 condition as far as im concerned, pristine looking guitars sometimes look to sterile to me

Re: Too Nice To Play????

I like guitars that look like someone loved them enough to play the daylights out of them! Scratches and wear are just another way of saying: I LOVE YOU!

Re: Too Nice To Play????

yup...that tele i sold ya...

i usually opened up the case and went......"WOW...this guitar is gorgeous...i'd hate to scratch it!"

i'd probably be alot better at playing the electric guitar now if i would've just played it more...!? :smack:

Re: Too Nice To Play????

Play it or sell it. I hang my guitars, and I cycle through the whole lot basically monthly. from the guild 12, to the Baby Taylor, to the MM Axis. They all get their turns.

Re: Too Nice To Play????

I think it has a lot to do with being in the case. It's easier to just grab the one that's already out. I think I'll hang it up & make it more accessible.

And yes Hoss...the Tele stays in a 2-guitar gig bag with the "Goldtop". But I play the sh*t out of them!!! I just grab the bag & have at it!!!

Re: Too Nice To Play????

I don't have any guitars like that, I like to keep mine out on individual stands or in my 7 guitar rack so I can just grab whatever guitar I'm in the mood for.

I do have a buddy that has 5 or 6 Martins that he keeps in the case 24/7. He likes to open up the cases to show them, talk about the fine tonal quality, then shuts the cases never even playing a single note. The only guitar he owns that gets any use is an old Yamaha that he keeps on the couch. I don't get it, but he's happy with his collection of case queens.

Re: Too Nice To Play????

I'm super careful with my guitars, and never tuck my shirts in, to avoid buckle rash.
Also, I never lean guitars against anything. They're either on a stand or in the case. I don't let anyone else play my guitars, unless I know they're as anal as me.

Other than that, I play whatever I feel like picking up. Sometimes, I feel guilty playing my 35th Ann. Black Beauty because the shiny black mahogany top and gold hardware is very vulnerable. It plays and sounds so galddammm good, tho, I play it anyway.

Re: Too Nice To Play????

sorry to be so hateful.

companies make expensive paintjobs so people with more money than sense buy them to not play and keep "new" looking IMO.

im happy with a solid finish so long as the guitars good :)

Re: Too Nice To Play????

I only buy stuff that I constantly use. My Dean is in the shop right now and I'll be selling my Gibson LP so I'm left with the stripped Epi for the moment.

My new guitar will be very versatile so that I don't need to buy more. I want it to look amazing (make me want to pick it up), play amazing and most importantly, sound amazing. I think I may have found the answer, but I'm still looking around. Less guitars means more one on one time with them.

Re: Too Nice To Play????

A man has to have his "beaters" and his "collectors" and yes I have my beaters and collectors. Although it has been known to take some of my collectors to certain gigs. I take care of all of my guitars (and basses) and I only allow certain people to play some of my prized guitars (provide they have washed and wear cotton gloves).

Most of my guitars do look good because I do have a regime of looking after all of them after playing them, I change stings and they go off at least twice a year to have things like fret dressing, neck reliefs, intonation checks etc by my friendly tech (who makes a decent living out of me). I hate having my guitars on stands (unless I have no option) because of the problems that rubber cause against some finishes - so the majority go in cases but they all get played.

Re: Too Nice To Play????

I waited all my life to buy a decent guitar. Got a Class 5 LP recently. I play it constantly, gig with it, take it on roadtrips (but not on airlplanes).

Re: Too Nice To Play????

I saw a guy I work with play live once.. at the end of the show, he took his black LP Custom off and slid it across the stage. :smack:

Re: Too Nice To Play????

My strats are fair game. I love beat up strats. I use them to switch pedals, play along on the drummer's cymbals, attack local rodents...

My PRS is nice but isn't one of those utterly drool-inducing models you see, and it has a few dings from the previous owner, so I wouldn't be heartbroken if I dinged it. It does get better treatment than my strats, but it still gets gigged.

my tele is in between. I don't really go out of my way to beat it up, but it's minty after 18 months of solid use.

Re: Too Nice To Play????

I have one instrument like that. It's a Gibson ES135 that I picked up a few years ago. It's a gorgeous instrument, sounds very nice, I put new frets in so it'd be like my other players........BUT, I've only used it a few times live. I find myself coming back to my beat up Custom and my bastard caster Tele. It just seems too nice to beat up.
