torn between Pegasus/Nazgul/Black Winter/59-Custom Hybrid

guys title says it all. i'll be pulling trigger on one of these later today. but as for now i'm feeling i'm not getting the complete picture yet.

guitar is a shredstick (yamaha rgz-II)
6-string, basswood body, maple neck (bolt-on), rosewood finger board, floating trem. i feel it's mildly a brighter guitar but nothing stingy.

on this guitar i'll be mostly playing stuff ranging from heavy rock to prog metal (picture yesteryear-opeth and no heavier).

as for pickups i've gone full circle going from ceramic -> alnico (II->V->UOA5) -> ceramic. i feel i need bit of that push in output for what i play. nazgul seems very appealing but feel it will be bit buzzy for what i'm after. i think pegasus trumps my requirements but i ve got nothing to backup my judgement on that.

ability to get nice clean and overdriven (not wreaking distortion) tones would be a definite 'nice to have' but is not an absolute requirement. if it helps, it would be beneficial to me if i can reap the benefits of the pickup in a live situation much more than a bedroom wank.

Thanks in advance

I understand what you mean by not getting the complete picture yet. It would be nice if they would at least have a b/m/t to see whenever they come out with a new pickup. The descriptions leave me clueless as to what they sound like. That is probably the main reason I recently purchased my first ever set of Dimarzios.

Re: torn between Pegasus/Nazgul/Black Winter/59-Custom Hybrid

They have the B/M/T posted for the 7 string versions, so that was what I was going off of. They seem to be in Distortion territory.

Re: torn between Pegasus/Nazgul/Black Winter/59-Custom Hybrid

something tells me there are still not many people using them, is it so. there is no conclusive demo that makes you feel pegasus is the pickup for you. just that from its spec and it's description you could ballpark what it's capable of.

all demos with high gain applications suggest that nazgul is far closer to DD territory. I've run into comments people made with similar sentiments as I who think that pegasus is the warm-ified cousin if the nazgul. I don't think I'll go for down running either. 59/custom hybrid was another one of those that used to be high on my list to get me into similar territory.

assuming you were after what i am, what DiMarzios did you end up with. how do they sound

Re: torn between Pegasus/Nazgul/Black Winter/59-Custom Hybrid

Perpetual burn, I like in an alder Charvel San dimas with a Floyd and rosewood fretboard. Really good cleans, crisp non harsh highs and it's pretty tight.

Re: torn between Pegasus/Nazgul/Black Winter/59-Custom Hybrid

perpetual burn is also a candidate i guess, i dont think in this context body wood material, that is inbetween basswood and alder, there is that much of difference. what do you think.

Actually, they were just delivered yesterday afternoon, so I haven't had the chance to install them yet.

I was looking for a big huge sound, tons of clarity and note seperation with just a little bit of "push" to the pickup, and a somewhat flat eq. I have a set of Blackouts which do that fantastic, so there was no need for me to buy another set. I've played (and still own) just about all of the "older" pickups in the Seymour Duncan lineup, so there was no need for me to go there again. I thought about the Black Winters because the eq of them seems perfect for me, but everytime I read that description of them, I laugh and roll my eyes. The Sentinent's description sounds perfect for me, but its eq seems like it would be lacking in bass for me. The Nazgul? Well, I don't really think I'm ready for sonic annihilation yet. Plus, I would think it has way too much mids for what I want.

I ended up reading tons of reviews about almost everything it seems. I just read, and read, and read, and went crazy....lol. I was super close to pulling the trigger on some Dimarzio D-Activators. I've been reading about those for close to a year probably. After reading quite a few reviews and speaking with Big Flannel, I went with a set of Dimarzio Titans. I don't know anything about Jake Bowen, and don't care anything about Periphery, but those pickups seemed to kind of jump out at me. Oh well, I guess we'll see after I install them this weekend.

thanks for pouring out bro. i've been recommended d-activators myself. i feel this more-or-less what i want, but still fear it is bit edgy for me. i've absolutely no idea what titans are about, much worse dimarzio catalogue (with no disrespectful intent).

well i'm really hooked on pegasus now. there seems few bruthas who have tried pegasus, and in a remarkable SDUGF turnout non of them complain about anything apart from the obvious slight pussyification from being modern metal. i'm goin to get me a pegasus.

Re: torn between Pegasus/Nazgul/Black Winter/59-Custom Hybrid

last minute issues, pegasus seems only available in humbucker spacing, all product photographs online only show humbcuker spaced pickup on their trembucker listings.

This could be laziness in picture taking. I know I have bought trembuckers with stock photos of humbuckers on ebay. If it says it is a trembucker in a listing, it should be a trembucker. Pegasus I have not played, however, based on what I have heard it would be my choice. Nazgul is VERY aggressive. They do cleans and extreme aggression well. I haven't been able to get much in between yet. Black Winter is very clear, very even and balanced. FWIW, I don't play Black Metal and love black winters. IMO they are an excellent all around pickup. This would be my other choice. 59/custom seems like it might be too bright in this context to me.

Hey, dude.

Here is the review I wrote for the Titan Bridge that Jolly mentioned.

The review itself was not solicited. I paid for the pickup myself through a third-party dealer and gave my honest opinion. Take a look and let me know if you think it's a fit for you.

thanks dood, awesome review, i'm lost for one single choice. these are all top candidates.

i pulled the trigger on a pegasus. got the correct form sorted out with the seller. the more i thought about it, i felt warmness is where most my tones lie. i know i might miss out on a bit of punch, but lets wait and see how it goes.

keep you options comming, thanks

alright dude s, rocking the pegasus now. just finished bit of playing after the pickup swap, totally worth it. awesome pickup, not brittle in anyway whether it is clean or with raunchier distortion. will be posting demos soon. thank you Seymour Duncan.
