Traded in today for a Classic 30...!!!!

Well i finally got rid of my POS hybrid marshall. (avt50) Traded it straight across for an older Classic 30. I had to do a lot of talkin, first he wanted to give me 150 for it becuase they pay half what they sell it for. The C30 was 300, and it had been there for awhile, and I eventually talked him into tradin it even. Quite a bit better than the AVT!

I haven't had the chance to turn it up and really hear it, but I will tomorrow. I'll probably buy some JJs for it though.

Anybody else like their Classic 30??

also, does anyone know how to determine the year?

hey i like the avt 50... it sounds pretty good for its price.

Re: Traded in today for a Classic 30...!!!!

sounds like a pretty awsome trade there Cory. Nice score.

The Classic series amps are great. There are some simple mods you can do to make them even better if you're handy with a soldering iron and take the proper safety precautions before opening up the amp. I highly recommend JJ tubes, they work very well in these amps. As for determining the year, there is no way to do it simply by looking at the serial number. If you post over at the Peavey amp forum, a customer service rep will look up the number for you and let you know what year it is.

No, no you don't.

Play a JCM 800. It'll make you sell your AVT (like me) regardless how much the JCM's cost! :laugh2:

Great deal Cory, you stole that! It's a great amp for the price and with a good OD/distortion pedal, you'll get a wide variety of sweet tones.

P.S. I saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off just a few days ago :D

Good deal! Yeah, I have one and I think it's a great bang for the buck amplifier. IMHO two thing's are a must: first, call Bob at www.eurotubes.com and he will set you up with the right tubes for your amp. Second, take the speaker out of the Peavey cabinet and build a cabinet to house the speaker. (Or a new speaker of your choosing.) Trust me, your tubes will last a LOT longer and the amp will sound better and much bigger. You'll have to make a small box to house a 1/4" jack and to connect the speaker wires to. Then get a speaker cable to go from that jack to the jack on the cabinet that house's the speaker. I built a 2x12 cabinet and use one speaker as the main and the other as the extension (no speaker in the Peavey cab.) Get a pedal of your choice and have fun.

yeah man! nice trade! i love my classic 30. lets me get basically any tone from hard rock to clean jazz and blues. i love it! also, it gets friggin loud for a 30 watt amp! jamming with a drummer and bassist it never gets above 6 because you cant hear any of the other instruments!

And in the spirit of what Ryan said, especially the safety issues, BlueGuitar.org has a much better mod for the boost control (it's a mid boost), that is definitely something that *needs* revoicing, if you get that voiced right it makes for a real cool solo boost. As is is not really smooth sounding and jacks the gain to much, mod it a bit, and you got a very tasty boost, for clean or dirty.

Re: Traded in today for a Classic 30...!!!!

Cory....that's a great trade and you definately got the better end of that deal, although the shop owner will probably have an eaiser time moving something that says Marshall as opposed to Peavy, due to marketplace perception.

The classic is really an uderrated amp, and you'll fall in love with the tube sound, both clean and dirty. JJ's seem to be a pretty popular choice for that amp. Are they EL34's or 84's in the power section? Try experimenting with several types of pre-amp tubes. Often, ams sound best with one type or brand tube in one slot, and somthing else in the next.

JJ's and the new Mullard line of 12ax7's (probably M's, but maybe C's if you want more gain) would be my choice for that amp. At $10-15 bucks apiece it's easy to justify the expense. Also, if you get a chance to try out some NOS tubes, jump on it. They can be had from anywhere between $30-$100 a tube. More spendy, but also more tone (IMO).

Have fun and give us an update on how you like the tone when you get to turn it up.

Re: Traded in today for a Classic 30...!!!!

The Classic 30 is a fine fine amp that should last you a long time. I see them constantly being played by folks in bar bands and have heard more than one story about them being played three nights a week in a gig setting for a decade or so.

Great amps....enjoy!

Nice trade! I have a Classic 50 212, I love it. I'm sure you'll love your 30.

Re: Traded in today for a Classic 30...!!!!

Sweeet. Thanks a lot guys, you guys got me a lot happier about this amp.

Mike, I'm taking you up on your cabinet idea. I'll do that this week, since a lot of spare wood in my garage leftover from a small box I built to pick my other amp off the floor. (made a big difference)

I'm off to order some JJs...

Thanks again,
Cory

Can't wait!
