Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I went through a rough patch years back and had to sell off some beautiful guitars. I have vowed never again. I haven't sold a guitar in 20 years.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I
end up gelling with it...Sh!t happens). I couldn't tell you the last guitar I've bought Brand New because you'll always take a loss if you ever

want/need to sell it.

I agree that its difficult not to lose money on reselling a guitar bought new. So I hardly ever buy new, either.

But it's not impossible. The exception to the rule is new guitars bought on closeout. Those are about the only ones I ever buy new. And I have resold a couple without losing money.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I used to own a lot of guitars and I used to swap 'em all the time, now I'm settled into my tele, ES-335 and my 000-15M. Each one of those fits me so well that I don't think I'll ever think about selling/trading them off. I like mixing up pedals and amps right now though, so I'm not out of the buying/selling/trading thing altogether.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

Once the O-conomy took a dive, it became more difficult to flip things easily so I slowed down on buying/selling guitars. Plus, I've got some great guitars that I'm completely attached to. So, 15 years ago, I was buying, playing, and selling about 1 guitar every month. Now, it's about 1 per year that gets sold and maybe 2 bought.

I was also into buying/selling amps until I seriously ran out of room. I just kept the lifetime keepers.

In the past 2 or 3 years, I moved onto pedals. Not just the ones I use regularly but a crap load of them.
I'm finding cheap deals on mint name brand stuff, so I buy to try, then sell if for what I paid or more.
I'm learning a lot about which pedals are the best and which ones suit my needs vs. the ones that I can simply move along. I know when to hold onto something nowadays. I don't let gems slip through my fingers like I used to do when flipping gear.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I'll be honest here. I have what is known as a addictive personality what with me being a recovered alcoholic and addict. Since I quit poisoning my body and got clean and sober over 12 years ago , the guitar has become my addiction . Which has been both a good and at times, at least according to my wife, a bad thing. In the past 2 years I have traded I would say , 2-3 guitars which were a ESP LTD M-15 , a Ibanez ART-300, and a P.O.S. Kramer which my wife bought for me. Now I have in my collection , 1 modified , Squier Affinity Butterscotch Telecaster , 2 Squier Modded Standard Strats, Epiphone 2004 MIK Gothic Les Paul Studio , and just recently I got back my old 2006 MIM Fender Standard Strat. I'm done with trading and have no intention of selling or swapping anymore. I'm going to be 54 at the end of the month and not only is my wife getting tired of me doing this, but I'm just getting too old to be playing gear dealer and would now like to start enjoying what I have .

Tee hee. I'm married, and 55. I enjoy what I have too.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I have two guitars that I will never sell, a couple of others that I would be really hard pressed to sell, and all the others are a revolving door because I like messing around with cheaper guitars. I'll buy them, enjoy them for awhile, and sell them. Never make a big profit or huge loss on any of them, so it probably evens out in the end financially.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

One a year or less normally. A bit of a bump in 2007 when I relocated to another continent, sold maybe nine guitars then, plus went through several guitars my first few years back. Back to normal now

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I have never sold one of my guitars. The last one I bought was actually supposed to be buying it for a close friend, but he never came up with the money, so I ended up still having the guitar.

Last guitar that I bought for me was 1997. The above mentioned guitar was 2002. I may be getting a new guitar this month though... ^_^

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I've owned around 20 or so electrics, haven't kept track. Out of those I sold, returned, or traded every one except my current one and the Peavey Predator I got 18 years ago. I need to take a cue from some of the others on this forum and stop selling my stuff.

Financial issues have put me in a position where I'm unable to buy anything other than a few accessories here and there, but as soon as things are looking better I'm planning on getting another Les Paul. A friend of mine told me once that I'd be happier with an R8 or R9, but they're a little too lightweight and to me (this is just my opinion), not worth the extra $1500.00 to $2000.00. I'd rather spend that kind of money on a USA PRS, or maybe a USA EVH Wolfgang.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I feel like if I'm not flipping guitars in the middle of every chord progression, I'm just not being a savvy shopper.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I used to be like that, trading my main guitar for something else every 2 months or so but I recently acquired a Godin LG p90 in a stunning natural flat finish and it has a great sound, feel and just fits me if that makes anysense... I don't see ever changing this as my main guitar. The Neck SD P-90 is smooth and chimey and has that juicy single coil tone with OD and the bridge p-90 is hot and full... it does have a bit of a honky midrangy sound but I'd rather adjust amp/pedal settings then trade this for a new guitar

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

Never...respect yourself and your purchases. If you sell off like a mad man then you're probably buying like an idiot.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I buy guitars to keep.

Never have i bought a guitar thinking of it's re-sale value.

I buy for life !

Since 1988, i have sold two guitars.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

The only guitars I sell I make for other guitarists. Of the 17 gits in my stable I made 12 that were too good to let go , a new D18, and the other 4
are irreplaceable vintage classics you would have to pry the fingers off my .44 to get at when I'm dead.

Most players buy with that mindset. I've heard it hundreds of times. However reality often sets in. You can run across a great deal on something new, that's better what you have now, and then sell the old one. Tastes change; what appealed to you 10 or 20 years ago may not now. You may get in an unforeseen financial position that means cutting back and selling off guitars so you can pay the bills. Many things happen over the years. Few of them seen in advance.

The classic line is: 'I'll never sell it' which is heartfelt at the time, but all you have to do is look at eBay to see how many times that's fallen apart. A big advantage to keeping your guitar's resale value in the back of your mind is that the: 'I'll never sell it' mentality is justification for some guys to treat their guitars pretty rough ('Hey, it's rock and roll man! They're supposed to get beat up'). Then when circumstances change (which they often do) it becomes: 'I can't sell it', because its covered in scratches and gouges and no one will give you much for it. Then you're stuck, a beat up guitar you've grown tired of. A self-fulling prophecy.

All I'm saying is don't end up full of regret because you didn't take care of a guitar. If it's worth keeping, it's worth keeping in good condition.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I collect. I do not sell. I have occasionally been known to give one away, though.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

As far as I can make out, I've got rid of 4 guitars in the last 30 years

A Westbury that made way for cash

A cheap Strat copy that I used to pack out a few empty corners in a wheelie bin

A Yamaha RGX/RGZ that went as part-ex on the MSG

A Les Paul Studio that went part way towards the SA2200

With the exception of the Westbury I ended up better off in each case - the Westbury sale left me with the only guitar free period in my adult life until I bought the RGX/RGZ around 3 or 4 years later.

Whoa hoss.

A lot of invalid assumptions here. And we all know what happens when we assume.

Buying and selling guitars doesn't necessarily have anything to do with self-respect, or respect for guitars. People by and sell guitars for lots of reasons.

Some people actually put a lot of thought into their purchases and acquisitions. The fact that they're different than you doesn't make them "idiots," or "mad men." The ease with which you are willing to ascribe bad motives or lack of intelligence to someone who is different from you, and about whom you know virtually nothing, does not reflect well on you, to be frank.

Re: Trading/buying/selling guitars... how often do you switch it up?

I'm buying a guitar in the next couple of months.... i don't remember the last guitar I bought. I think it was my 78 mustang about 2 or 3 years ago.
