i bought a traynor 50 blue a few weeks back, i love the tone of this amp and about everything about it, but i think it could be a little warmer than it is.

now, i know that adding an extra cab is the best way to do it, but i dont have money, space, or the audiance for that (only room level playing, so i dont want too much volume). also ive heard changing speakers is a good way, but im not ready for that yet, thats too major, and i just got this baby.

so im thinking the best way is a tube change. ive heard people all around different forums and product reviews saying that jj/tesla e34l's warm it up a lot, so im most likely getting those, but what about preamp tubes, which ones would make it warmer. im looking for a bit more gain too, not that i need it for now, but i might change in style like everyone does, so if it could have a bit more gain, that would be sweet. so, anyone know what kind of preamp i should get? and if the jj's are the right ones?

I've heard some people say that preamp tubes can have more of an effect than changing power tubes. I'm not sure if that's true, but I didn't notice a little more of a difference when I changed mine. If you go to www.eurotubes.com, they sell retube kits for this amp. If you want more gain, they have a high gain option. I think it probably just makes the preamp breakup earlier on the gain knob (from what I've heard), but you might as well try it. Also, if you find that the power tube change didn't do much, then atleast you have a backup set for when the stock ones wear out.

Another thing to consider is that the amp is new and the speaker hasn't broken in. This can make a huge change. After my speaker broke in, it sounded way better. It also could handle bass notes without farting out and was alot smoother overall. It's a really good speaker, so you probably won't need to change it, unless you find that the sound isn't right for you.

cool, thats pretty sweet because ive heard more and more about people putting different tubes in different positions and stuff, but i have no idea about any of that, so that could help me a lot, the thing is, would the extra gain one also make it warmer?

everytime i play the amp it sounds a bit better, i guess thats because of the speaker breaking in, how long does it take for it to complete? hopefully it dont stop getting better now.

Some people mix different preamp tubes, but mainly to drop the gain lower. For power tubes, the E34L's have a little more headroom and may sound a little smoother. As far as more gain making it warmer, that depends. What sort of sound are you trying to get? Do you need more compression or are you trying to get rid of fizz? etc........... Also, what type of music are you playing?

The amp can be hard to dial in because the gain, channel volume, and master all control the overall volume level, so you just have to play with them until you get the right combo. Also, there's a certain point where it will start to compress slightly with the boost on, which smooths out notes a little. You just have to find the right amount on the gain knob, but if you use too much gain, it make get harsh and sound like mush. I usually dial in my settings with the boost on becuase the regular drive channel seems to sound good no matter what, but the boost is more picky becuase its boosting certain frequencies, especially mids.

As far as the speaker goes, it really depends on how loud you play. Mine took several months because I live in an apartment and can't really crank it too loud. There's no guarantee that it will sound better once it breaks in, but some people find that it does.

I LOVE the Sovtek LPS preamp tubes and the Sovtek WXT power amp tubes. I have some JJ's and EH's 12AX7 preamp tubes sitting around if you want to buy them for a reasonable price. PM me if interested.

well, i play more 80's rock/metal guns n roses, van halen, aerosmith, than some earlier stuff like led zeppelin and such. but whenever i improv its always blues, i love playing blues not shredding or anything like that. i kind of liked the warmness i can get with the crate v32 that has el84's. im not saying i want it exactly like that, which is why i didnt get that amp, but i would like it to be a bit closer to it.

The amp can be kinda bright sometimes. I've heard that JJ preamp tubes are dark sounding, so maybe that's why they're a good match. I usually set the treble on 6, mids on 6.5, and bass on 7 to give it enough low end. I used to have different settings with the old tubes, so your settings may have to change afterwards. New tubes should definitly warm it up though. I'm not saying that it will give you exactly what you're looking for, but it should atleast be an improvement.

soo... its either the jj ecc83 or the EH 12ax7. which ones do you think would satisfy my needs more? ive heard that both the EH and the JJ are warm tubes.

Honestly, I think either one would be fine. I don't think you'd notice that much of a difference. Most people complain that the stock Sovteks don't have enough clarity, so I think its more of a difference between crappy and decent tubes that you'd notice, rather than individual brands. You could always get both and test it out and just keep one as a backup set. Preamp tubes usually last a while though, so that may not be necessary.

Also, I noticed today that I need to have the master at aleast 3.5 for it to sound its best. Otherwise, its just not pushing the speaker enough. I was compensating by having a higher channel volume settings before, but I switched them around and it sounds really smooth now.

yeah, i usually have the master volume at 3.5 and channel volume at 5 for normal pretty quiet bedroom jam, and master at 5 and channel at 5 for loud bedroom jam, anything over that, my room starts shaking like crazy, and glass cups start falling on the ground and breaking and a big mess starts. haha.

Yeah this amp can be rediculously loud. I changed my settings to master 3.5, channel vol 5 and gain 6.5, with the eq all at 6. I used to have a higher bass and mid setting, but realized that it was really just compensating for a lower master vol setting, since there was less low end.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that the pickups your using will make a difference. I'm using relatively lower output pups (Seth Lovers or stock single coils in my strat). I found that higher output pups didn't sound as good and got overcompressed but clean pups remained clear even with a lot of gain.

Do you use the boost alot? I think it sounds really good, but I with there was a way to control the volume increase. Sometimes if the amp is at the right volume boosted, its a little to quiet when the boost is off. Atleast it sounds good though.

everytime i try to do anything heavy, or solo, i have boost on.

my bridge pickup is "moderate output" on SD website, so im guessing high output. they say my neck is moderate too, but it sounds like a million bucks.

i have a traynor ycv 40 and have had it for over 2 years now. its undergone the out of town repairs now, and has undergone many changes, turns out, all the stuff yourkville was doing to reduce the hiss and make it warmer wasnt working..in the end, i decided there was one more thing i hadn't yet replaced, the power tubes. i had replaced them with the cheap sovtek ones that come stock, so i decided to put in a set of el34 groove tubes. HOLY CRAP. HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!! there is so much more oomph, and its 10 times warmer then ever. i love it, i highly recomend putting in el 34's, especially if you only have the single speaker model like myself. i found the 6L6's only sounded good in the 80 watt 4x12

I tried a YCV50BLUE a couple weeks ago. My only complaint was that it got farty with the gain knob past 7 or so. Would a tube change solve this, or did I not have it dialed in right or something?

wait, you were able to put el34's in it? does that mean i would be able to put 6l6's in mine, or el84's?? el84's are way warmer than 34's, so if you want warmth, id go with those.

you've dialed-in too much bass that's why it gets farty. a single 60W Vintage 30 won't be able to take an all cranked up 50W tube amp. you can either back-off the bass or get an extension cab or better yet a 4X12.

BTW, EL84 tubes won't fit the YCV blue. they're much smaller than EL34s and have different pins. and you have to mod your YCV blue to accept 6L6.

Cool, thanks for the tip. It's currently the front-runner for a new amp.
