..ycv 40...anyone gigging with this amp?...hows it take dirt boxes and effects?....loud enough to compete with a drummer?...i;m looking at picking one up...all the negatives in my phat cat thread made me pass on the set i was thinking of picking up so i have a little more money in the amp fund...help me out bros..

Re: traynor ycv 40

I've never heard of one person who bought one, who didn't love it. I wouldn't mind having one, based on all the positive feedback from owners. There are about 5 members who use that as their main amp.

i've never had any problems with any drummer!

and as far as pedals...it LOOOOOOVVVVEEEESSS pedals!!!

i also picked up a 1x12 extension cab with mine!

it replaced a Blues jr, mainly for the clean headroom, which it definitely has, but with the right pedals you can do ALOT of things with this amp!

Re: traynor ycv 40

glad to hear all the positives...i hear great things about the clean channel, but i'd like to hear the drive channel for myself,,,is it usable?

Re: traynor ycv 40

I had my YCV80 for a few years and only sold it because it was too much volume.

I loved it. but i see a YCV20 in my future. maybe a 40.

the clean is very fendery in that blackface way. and the drive channel does a lighter british crunch. The boost function is done quite well if you use it to push you up front for solos.

the crunch channel is very good. worlds better than the hot rod fenders and both channels love pedals.

Though dont expect to beyond classic rock and some 80s metal with the gain channel.

Re: traynor ycv 40

i'm not looking for a metal amp...my dsl does that nicely...i'll problobly use the clean channel mostly with my blues driver, muff, and phase 90...with my dl4 in the loop...you guys like the reverb?

I gig and record with a YCV40 2x10 that also has a 2x12 cabinet wired up. I gig with it and record with it (you can hear it at www.supernova.com/Steve-Hanson ) and I love the sounds it produces for cleans and distorted. I had it at a party I played at last night and had it on 4. I know 40W seems like low power, but this plenty loud, no matter what the venue. I say that because it can handle it's own in any venue that doesn't mic it's amps. The overdrive is sufficient for metal with the boost on and a boost pedal in front of the amp just improves that. The reverb is quite nice, I find throwing it on 5-6 just makes everything sound fuller. It get fairly washy at 9-10 though.

Word of caution: the cleans break up real soon IMO. I found around 5 brreak up started to occur so I stuck a 12AT7 in the V1 and that helped put off the break-up to 6 with most my guitars (My phat cat Tele drives it a little at 4, but it sounds good). For extra flexibility, I'd suggest a clean boost pedal/volume to give a crunchy dirty clean sound and extra dirt (like a solo boost) if you always have the boost on when in overdrive.

Re: traynor ycv 40

It's ok. Traynor probably has the niche of value/tone in the market right now. Even though they sound good you're still playing a budget amp. So my take on Traynors are if you need something good for the interim until you can get the amp you dream about or if you don't care about nuance and expression in a tube amp.

The YCV40 is ok but a step above that is the 50 blue. The sound can rival a DSL50. It's 50w of British sound and portable. It looks cool too. The 40 & 50 both take pedals well. The YCV50 blue is by far my favorite of their amps. They can use a tube change. I tried JJs a the blue before and it opened up a little. Low end is a little tapered off on the Traynors but the sound is tight. JJs are a good match for those.

thanks for all the input...i've been bidding on ebay, but losing every one...maybe things will change when the next one pops up...

Re: traynor ycv 40

Keep in mind the difference between the 2x10 and 1x12 combos. The 1x12 has a worse stock speaker and overall not as great of a sound as the 2x10. Both have an extra output for a second 4 ohm cab.

The YCV50 Blue Yngwiestein spoke of has EL34s and a 1x12 V30 speaker, as opposed to the 6L6 1x12 70/80 or 2x10 Tube 10s, and is worth a look, but a few bucks more.

Traynor also has a new Custom Special 50 amp that I've tested and is quite pleasing, a real mix between a Mesa and a Marshal VM, and has EL34s.
