Treble booster vs. e.q.

Which do you prefer, and why?

I'm highly considering a treble booster, but I am wondering if an e.q. will give me the same thing but with more versatility. I'm looking at the EXH Graphic Fuzz, as it allows you to apply e.q. to the fuzz, or to turn of the fuzz completely and just use it as an e.q. They'va also got the Screaming Bird treble booster and the Tube e.q.

Thanks.

Re: Treble booster vs. e.q.

I've always preferred an EQ & always had a one in my rig whether it be a parametric for tonal shaping or a Boss GE-7 as a simple lead boost.
That pedal you mentioned sounds like it has the best of both worlds so going with that to begin with may be a good option.

Re: Treble booster vs. e.q.

I have a Keeley TMB which is a dual treble boost and I love it. It adds a presence and clarity that my old GE7 didn't.

Re: Treble booster vs. e.q.

I prefer EQ as you have more control to shape your overall tone. Sometimes its not treble you want but mids...

BTW - I tried the EHX Graphic Fuzz before. Its big. Not pedal board friendly. There was just too much tweaking involved too. I had trouble dialing a decent fuzz - it was more distrotion than fuzz. I sent mine back. YMMV. Lets us know how you like it.

Treble booster and EQ are two completely different animals.

What are you looking to get out of it?

Re: Treble booster vs. e.q.

An EQ will never sound like a TB and the same is true backwards...

EQ's can be useful with almost all amps...TB's IMHO are useful with very few amps but if you have one of those amps and a TB they are magic combo!

Re: Treble booster vs. e.q.

I like the added crunch i get from a byoc tri-boost but i am also planning on getting an eq pedal for more tonal shaping options.

Re: Treble booster vs. e.q.

A straight-up treble boost can be ... trebly! In other words, it really depends on your amp, guitar, and a bunch of other factors as to whether it will sound good or not. (And your own ears, of course)

By strange coincidence I was playing with a few boosts into my Mesa Tremoverb yesterday and I REALLY loved the tone of the Catalinbread Naga Viper into the Mesa (I keep it set as a straight-up TB).

However -- I had to radically change the EQ on the amp itself to keep it from sounding thin ... which, of course, left me with a very dark and strange-sounding amp when the Naga was turned off. Thanks to Channel Cloning this was a non-issue, but in a single channel amp, this could be a serious issue, especially at a gig ...

As for EQ, I've had a GE-7 since time out of mind and I think I've used it a total of 4-5 times, max. Graphic EQ's do not sound natural to me at all and there is definitely some weird phasey stuff going on at the edges of the frequency Q (to my ears). In a high gain situation you are less likely to notice it, but with low or medium crunch, it's quite annoying.
