Trem Cover on a Strat...do you remove it?

I've read several posts where guitarists believe that removing the trem cover on a Strat improves the tone.

How many of you folks have done this and found that the tone improved/changed?

Just curious

Thanks

Dave

I don't think that it does anything for the tone, but I left the cover off of the two strats that I've owned. Just too lazy to put it back on after adding springs and tightening it down.

I did!! Much better, more resonance, distortion is a little raunchier, high end sings more. DO IT! You wont regret it. Plus that stupid, UGLY cover feels uncomfy.

Somebody fed you a line of crap, man. The ONLY thing that's gained from removing the cover is the ability to make some noise by banging on the springs. That, and quicker access to them for adjustments.

I don't feed myself crap. The tone opened up a lot more since I took off the cover, maybe the raunchiness is due to wiring changes I've made, but I'm telling you, the guitar will have a bit more resonance. I hate having those things on, and yeah, spring scrapes sound cool too!! Strats sound worse with those covers on, and again, they're UGLY.

well, from what i've experienced...acoustic volume does increase a bit

Re: Trem Cover on a Strat...do you remove it?

Haven't noticed a tonal difference, but changing strings is just WAY easier with that piece of plastic gone... most of the time it's covering the string holes in the trem block.

Stupid!

Leave it to JB to be courteous and well mannered in his response. Thanks JB for making my night. I'll be laughing myself to sleep now.

Hey, guys, I want/need a Strat Trem cover for this Flying V I just rebuilt, where I installed a Strat Trem. Where can I get one in black? Wanna sell yours? It would be the icing on the cake as far as the looks of the thing. It already sounds great.

I'll send you the box, the postage to ship the cover.

Or, a link?

I have mine on my strat because Fender_Punk took his off.

Re: Trem Cover on a Strat...do you remove it?

I removed mine to adjust the spring tension. I played it each time to check the feel of the trem'. All I found is that my belt buckle was grounding. No noticeable change in tone! But whatever works for you man!

Re: Trem Cover on a Strat...do you remove it?

There was no change in tone when I played with the trem cover off on my HWY 1.

That said, I also dampen my springs with foam. I guess that the vibration from undampened tremolo springs could be acoustically louder with the cover removed. I really don't see that as having an impact on the electric signal, though. Sometimes I wonder how much we trick ourselves into hearing differences because we want to hear them.

I tried taking the trem cover off & didn't like it. It was slightly louder but less focused, didn't feel right.

This is a very poor design feature....Fender should recognize it and change it.

Re: Trem Cover on a Strat...do you remove it?

i used to keep it off back in the day, i was playing a show and was getting a little to showy and decided to rip a solo with the guitar behind my head. everything was great until i tried to pull the guitar down to normal playing position and found that my lovely locks were stuck in the springs. that sucked hard boys gotta tell ya.

i kept the cover on all my guitars for years after that. now some have it and some dont but most of my guitars are hardtails anyway

ive heard the rumor about better tone or whatever, i dont hear much of a difference.

Re: Trem Cover on a Strat...do you remove it?

I left it off my Peavey, but that's because it won't fit with the Hipshot Tremsetter installed. :laugh2:

It's still installed on my Jackson and Fender.

An enormous plus one to this sentiment.. For my concern, I can definitely not hear any differences...

That would be my only reason to leave the trem cavity open... Now I cut out some parts of my cover and put it on, so it protects the newly installed tremol-no and still accessing it easily..

i normally keep the trem cover on for one reason.... i stuff foam in there to stop the springs from ringing out... i don't like that spring noise when i hit the strings hard...

Some axes in my collection don't have their covers because i got lazy and never put them back on...

Re: Trem Cover on a Strat...do you remove it?

I removed mine cause I heard all of this "theory". It's back on. Plus, I want to add some artwork and its a good place to start.
