Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??
Hello,
The springs I have in my Jeff Beck guitar are black and the guy (years ago) said they were coated for silence. Well, three vintage uncovered springs are a little too tight for me, I pull up from open G to A#, and leaves me enough downward "press" to go exactly from D on the G string, high or low on the neck, to A exactly. So, to get enough pressure and not have a spring fall out on an upward full pull, (yes that happened cause my black covered springs are a little loose) I used a great tight vintage in the middle, and the 2 black ones fanned from the outermost spring holes on the block, and set them both next to the middle one.
It is perfect for me. I can hear the vintage make a little "creaking" noise now and then, but I always forget to lube it. Not a problem, but I will be lubing it when my Tri-Flow gets here, as I am set for 2 gigs, maybe 3, which for me, is a BIG DEAL! If I am lucky I get 2 live gigs a year sometimes. (long boring health story most have heard).
If it was up to me, I like the old springs that sound like faux reverb. But not sure how to order those particular ones.
Clapton decked his Strat and he missed the "sympathetic" tone the springs sometimes made. So he kept the trem locked down with a chunk of wood between block and back cavity, and left the springs on but screwed pretty tight.
Hope any of this helped,
SJ
