I have a question... I really like the Raw vintage trem springs.. Ive been curious about the new noiseless ones tho. First, they look cool in the colors, but.. Any of you tried the noiseless ones?? What do you think?? Better yet, anyone tried the Raw vintage AND the noiseless ones that can tell me how they feel/sound in comparison? just wondering.. Thanks for the input!

Er, what effect would each of the colours have on tone? Would combining different colour springs in one guitar broaden its tonal spectrum?

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

I'm assuming the springs are coated to try to defeat sympathetic vibration? I haven't heard of or seen noiseless springs before. I am aware of guys stuffing various things in the spring cavity to dampen the springs, however. There's threads on that here anyone can search for.

Floyd Upgrades.com sells red noiseless springs I'm pretty sure. Ive never used them, but I hear ppl love them

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

I didn't even know noiseless springs existed so obviously I'm still using the vintage springs.

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

Hello,
The springs I have in my Jeff Beck guitar are black and the guy (years ago) said they were coated for silence. Well, three vintage uncovered springs are a little too tight for me, I pull up from open G to A#, and leaves me enough downward "press" to go exactly from D on the G string, high or low on the neck, to A exactly. So, to get enough pressure and not have a spring fall out on an upward full pull, (yes that happened cause my black covered springs are a little loose) I used a great tight vintage in the middle, and the 2 black ones fanned from the outermost spring holes on the block, and set them both next to the middle one.
It is perfect for me. I can hear the vintage make a little "creaking" noise now and then, but I always forget to lube it. Not a problem, but I will be lubing it when my Tri-Flow gets here, as I am set for 2 gigs, maybe 3, which for me, is a BIG DEAL! If I am lucky I get 2 live gigs a year sometimes. (long boring health story most have heard).
If it was up to me, I like the old springs that sound like faux reverb. But not sure how to order those particular ones.
Clapton decked his Strat and he missed the "sympathetic" tone the springs sometimes made. So he kept the trem locked down with a chunk of wood between block and back cavity, and left the springs on but screwed pretty tight.
Hope any of this helped,
SJ

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

Take a piece of masking tape and wrap it into a tight ring around your tremolo spring. Keep the glue side out, you want the tape to stick to itself, not to the spring. Wrap another strip of tape around the ring this time glue side in, you want the tape to stick to itself, not collect every piece of dirt that happens to float nearby. Sofa king easy huh?

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

For those that are unaware of the noiseless springs in which I speak, they are coated with a polymer and are supposed to cut noise. They are avail in black and red. (red being heavier tension) See here:

The Raw Vintage springs are thicker than stock, but have a smooth easy feel. I can actually add an extra one and still have a smooth bar feel. See here:

One of my very favourite ever Led Zeppelin recorded moments is at 4:02 during "In The Evening" when Page dumps the twangbar, noises and all.

Why hide it?

That's what I was thinking. If the springs are making noises I seem to be a fan of those noises. I dump the bar a lot on my Floyd'd guitars and I like how it sounds.

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

I do like the spring noise sometimes when using the bar, but I have one floyd equipped guitar that when palm muting the trem springs make it sound like someone kicking a reverb tank.

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

I've never played quietly enough to notice if my springs make noise.....

I just stuff foam rubber behind the springs and figure it's all good.

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

I put the red ones on my Charvel San Dimas with a Floyd, I got the heavier ones from Floyd rose off ebay ( they are genuine Floyd rose and cheaper than Floydupgrades). They work great, no noise and I'm able to use 2 instead of 3 which gives me a little more room to block the trem so it's not floating. My only complaint would be the coating keeps the trem claw ( which is grounded to the pot) from carrying that ground to the bridge via the springs. So on my axe I got a little hum when I toon my hand off the bridge. A combination of scratching the coating off the springs where the meet the trem claw and trem block, and adding a ground to the shielded body cavity from the pot solved it, no problems.

I'm not even a Led Zeppelin fan but I absolutely LOVE that part. First thing that came to my head, too.

What can I say? I don't really give springs much thought.

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

The spring noises match my creaky body and wheezy breath. In that way, my Strat and I are in perfect unison, both relics from the past, liable to fall apart at any moment. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

Sometimes I like the spring noise, and sometimes I don't. Depends on the moment.

Re: Trem springs.. Raw vintage or the new noiseless ones??

It all depends on what kind of vibrato system you're using and how you have it set up but I use raw vintage springs and love them!!

And this is where Michael Scott would say "That's what she said".

Personally, I have never heard spring noise. Either I'm doing something wrong or more deaf than I thought or damn lucky I'm not GASing for new springs.
