Tried a Duncan '78 today...

Re: Tried a Duncan '78 today...

Nothing posted in here discourages me from wanting to try one as a neck pickup.

Has anyone ever metered the coils on one of these? The descriptions all could describe the PAF/Custom hybrids... hmmm.

The more you talk about this pickup the more it reminds me the things I didn't like about my gfs veh, how it sounded trebly and harsh in my ash strat, maybe they are more similar than I thought. That's disturbing :P

Isn't is supposed to sound close to a Pearly Gates? Has anyone compared them?

Re: Tried a Duncan '78 today...

I'm really confused, it sounds like you guys are talking about a different pup from the ones I have. I've got a 78 in my R8, and my CU24. It's a PAF it sounds nothing like a CC....but I've never thought of it as overly bright. It's got just the right touch of compression to work well in the bridge. I've got it paired with a Seth in the neck and it sounds great. Very classic...until I crank the gain and really tighten up my pick attack.

I know the EVH tone is in there, but it's not something I get when I just plug in. That's why I've always felt that the 78 amplifies the way you play and colors it just a tad before sending it out to the amp.

its a little hot for a typical paf but you arent wrong. i dont think its overly bright either. its a really good pup for some people as you know.

I'd like to get one and put an A2 in it. All the things people complain about it, could be fixed with the correct mag.

I'm going to do something more: since I have an unused veh (supposed to be 43 awg with 11.2K) and a gfs classic II a2, measuring 8.1K, I'm thinking about making an hybrid using the A2 and see what happens.

No, the PG has much more low minds. In a tremolo block guitar in particular the '78 can get pretty thin. Not as thin as a APH.

The '78 being aggressive is not about it having lots of treble. It doesn't.

Re: Tried a Duncan '78 today...

After hearing this, I may pickup a '78. While I would be putting it in a strat with 500K pots, it's a bit darker than most MIA strats I have played. Not sure why:dunno: But I think it would go great with my Jet City JCA100H. This amp is a bit dark and has a good amount of compression to it. I currently have a Pearly Gates in the bridge of my strat, but I've found it's a bit over powering in the low mids and not quite clear enough on the low strings. Also, a bit more juice in the output would be right up my ally.

That's what I think based on my experience with the 78'. Maybe the harsh overtones I heard will turn out to be nice crunchy highs in your rig.

Re: Tried a Duncan '78 today...

I'm using a 78 neck pickup and it sounds great. It's never leaving my guitar.

Re: Tried a Duncan '78 today...

I am using the '78 in the bridge with a UOA5 magnet and a '59b in the neck to balance it out

Question how would the Duncan 78 sound in a Gibson Les Paul with a Floyd rose in your opinions

What kinda music? What kinda amp? I can't believe it would sound bad...but it might not be right for really heavy stuff.

It would sound just like a '78. The Floyd would thin out the LP and the '78 would be thin and bright like it is. I put a '78 in my SG with a regular TOM and it was still like a superstrat sound.
