Tried out a Mesa Triple Rec Reborn today.

Today I wound up going to Des Moines after my tax appointment. And you know how you get that feeling in your gut to go somewhere and check things out? Well, my gut was telling me to head to Guitar Center.

I walked in and looked over the clearance guitars and then headed over to the used guitars, not really paying attention to the amps. But when my eyes drifted down below the used guitars, there it was, a Triple Rec Reborn for a thousand bucks. So I tried it out. The cleans were more crisp and clear, the distortion channels had a nice throaty growl, and it was fairly easy to dial good tones on each channel. Granted, I wasn't able to turn it up too loud, but what I heard was a great improvement over the older 3 channel Triple Rec I used to have. And I used to fight and fight with the tone controls on the old one to find tones I liked, which is why I ended up bartering it off.

So, of course, I put it on layaway! :) I'll post more when I get it home and have a chance to let 'er rip.

ETA: I was originally headed to Des Moines to try out a Blackstar Fly.......yeah......that didn't happen.

Great deal for a Multi-Watt. What's the cosmetics? (chrome-plate, cloth, black-vinyl)

It's just the standard ol' recto look. Diamond plate front with the aluminum slotted grille thingy, chrome dome knobs, black face, same head cabinet, same "elephant" tolex. The front looks identical to my old Triple Rec, except for the extra switches. And this one in particular has a few minor scuffs and could stand some Armor All on the tolex. Nothing major.

Congrat! I bought a reborn dual used 2 months ago and I absolutely love it. Mine was 1300$ canadian so basically the same price as yours, meaning you got a great deal on a triple... I'll recoup the difference the day we both have to retube... ;)

The guitarist in my band plays through an Orange TH50... and the more gigs we play the more I want to give him my Recto...

I assume you mean TV50?? I really miss my TH30 (no 50 versions of the th series) and it's the only orange I would buy again. The TV50 I owned I never got along with. The recto is just so much better for me and, ironically, the TH would complement it nicely imho. The th was versatile and fun, gainy, crunchy and its shape eq knob worked amazingly. On the tv, the shape knob through the same speakers/cab as the th had to be left dead center, otherwise it either was way too scooped or Had nothing but mids and sounded super boxy. It must work well for some genres and tones (still, orange are discontinuing the line) but nothing it did worked for me. Again and back to topic: damn these reborns are amazing!

TH30. Sounds great on it's own but he's getting absolutely decimated on stage. Doesn't seem to have the mids or the power to punch through. It's fine for rhythm but his leads are getting buried with his master on 10.

Interesting, I would've assumed otherwise as my experience had been very positive in a band context, although I wasn't putting a 30w amp against anything more powerful. Does he get buried by your rov25 or is this the project where you play bass?

Re: Tried out a Mesa Triple Rec Reborn today.

Recs get a bad rap due to the nu metal crowd some years ago but they are great, versatile amps, especially the 3 channel versions. The Reborns are even better and $1,000 is a killer deal on a Triple. Usually Duals go for that much. I believe Triples are supposed to be a bit tighter, but I've never owned one. Part of me really wants a Recto again.

I'm on bass. The rhythm player's on an acoustic (DI) and we have a keyboard player (DI or amp'd, depends on venue). I've got him running the contour up around 1:00 to 2:00.

I think it might be his cab (Randall). Sounds kind of scooped with a lot of highs and lows. Nice for cleans and rhythm.

I don't know how tight this one is since I didn't get the chance to turn it up, but it seemed to be tighter than my old Triple. My old one had such a flubby bottom end that I ended up getting a set of New Sensor Svetlana EL-34s for it, which helped considerably.

Does he use an overdrive for his leads, or not? If not, maybe that's all he needs. A MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive, a Duncan 805, or another Tube Screamer type pedal would do the trick.

I don't mind having to pay for a couple extra power tubes, because I like having the extra headroom for the clean channel.
