Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

Hi all,

I tried out 3 different 4x12 cabinets with Marshall DSL head (all EQ knobs at 5) and a MusicMan Petrucci model at guitar center today. The cabinets are Marshall 1960 Lead, B52 (the more expensive one without the metal grill), and Mesa Rectifier Cabinet. All of them are the slant angled ones.

I like the Marshall one best, but the bass response is a bit loose. The Mesa cab is very good, but it costs $899 and it seems that the mid frequency is held back juuuust a little bit. The B52 lacks punch and bass.

The Marshall cab costs $649. Is this worth it? I read on HC reviews that some people choose Behringer BG412S over the Marshall cab, and it only costs $250. They said that the Behringer cab is punchier and more open.

By the way, I'm going to use the cab with TriAxis + VHT 2502 setup. That's right, for those of you who remembered my thread, I decided to get the VHT, instead of 2:90.

You can always go custom if you want. Sorry i cant really give you an opinion, but Splawn makes unloaded 4x12s for $400, fully customized. I ordered a 2x12 a couple weeks ago.. cant wait. Good luck!

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

Hmm I think that the behringer could sound better than 1960 even when it's so cheap. Some guys have said that the behringer have better spread than marshall.

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

you could have gone with a better guitar... that petrucci sig sounds like a wet blanket.

but i guess for cab comparison usage it's ok

go for the 1960 .. cant go wrong

i'd be weary to buy a behringer. their products have an uncanny ability to break apart after a couple of months use. marshall cabs are built to last .. or at least, they were last time i checked

Yip, Davey's right... Marhall 1960s seem to be of high quality and some guys seem to even prefer them over Mesa cabs with their Mesa heads...

You could also try out some Framus cabs... their offer a high quality craftmanship too

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

Framus cabs are really expensive. Do you guys know anything about Kustom cabs?

The 1960 Lead cab is really sturdy, but I doubt that it is built better than a mesa is.

Speaking of Behringer cabs, I'm not worried about it falling apart. I checked out one and it's built pretty solid, but I didn't get a chance to try it.

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

I like the Marshall 1960AV w/4 Vin 30's, and the stereo jack on back.

I like the Bogner cabs the best, but they're expensive, only come in mono, and there's not many stores that carry them. The Splawn is probably similar in quality.

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

Haha framus dragon cabs are (100EUR) ~ 100$ cheaper than the Marshall 1960AV here
I like the Dragon and the Mesa over the 1960A but I am a V30 guy!
I've got the Framus Dragon 412 and I'm really satisfied for the moment... :D

+1. The Bogner cabs own everything I've ever tried, but I really like the Marshall 4X12s. The few amps I've tried through the Mesas just didn't sound right to me, but it could have been just the speakers.

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

I've HAD to use a Behringer cab. I didn't really want to. In the end, I just used my combo speaker instead of the 4*12. It really was that bad. I guess I had about 200 playing hours with one, so it isn't really just once.

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

Remember to try it out with YOUR HEAD and YOUR AXE.

Different amps react grossly different to cabinet and speaker designs... it's almost disgusting.

My Single Rec and 5150 love(d) V30's... my XXX didn't.

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

Avatar sells a 4x12 loaded with V30's for around $500. I'd go with that over the B-52 or Mesa (I don't like the 90 watt Celestions).

Used Marshall cabs rock.

Yeah....buy the cheapest Marshall cab you can find, sell two of the G-75's, and replace them with 2 Vintage 30's. Use the 2 stock G-75's and 2 Vin 30's in an X pattern, and you'll have a huge sounding cab. That's the speaker config. that comes in the Bogner Uberschall cab.

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

I dont like behringer cabs, they sound small and confined, cant explain it, certainly nothing on a Marshall 1960 cab, the 1960cabs are Fat in the way that a mesa cab is "tight".

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

How are the Behringer cabs made? Are they plywood, like the Mesas and the Marshalls, or particleboard. Particleboard just won't hold up to rock and roll--might be okay in a bedroom or studio. Mesa and Marshall do really excellent cabinet work, and they hold up.

Re: Tried Out Cabinets @ GC Today

I decided to order the Behringer BG412S. I'm taking the leap of faith on this one based on the HC reviews. 9 out of 10 people seems to favor this cab over Marshall and Mesa. Some of them say that the speakers don't really color your sound, and I like that. :fingersx: :fingersx: :fingersx:

The Behringer cabinet is made of plywood (E1 MDF), by the way.
