Tried some new mixing techniques - honest feedback appreciated.

I'm still tweaking a bit but I have been watching some mix tutorials and applied some of the techniques to this track. I used, Amplitube and Guitar Suite for the amp sims and the usual suspects for drums and synths.

Amazing! great job! its awesome to see you learning and trying to improve on something that I though was already excellent :)

CC- I am listening to my KRK rokit 6s in an untreated room: I like the breakdowns, I thought some cymbals would add a nice tough. excellent job mixing as usual!! amazing. I thought the vocals could be a bit less - lots of lyrics - . I am not convinced on the bassdrum, maybe diff textures on the drums and vocals like echos and eq-ing would add something too. Doesnt really need any of that, its good as is!

Good stuff! :beerchug:

Re: Tried some new mixing techniques - honest feedback appreciated.

Glad you got the monitors, very cool! Good tips bro, I'm going to keep tweaking to make it more interesting. I'll bring the kick, hi hats and cymbals up touch and I'm working on the vocal a bit right now. I don't consider myself a great mixer or at least not at the level I'd like to be at, anyhow it's always good to learn new tricks. Thanks for the CC.

Really dig the tune!

The vox could use some Autotune. I would make the synths a touch less fat to get the kick occupying more of the low freq domain.
Perhaps EQ'ing the synths differently so they don't stack up so much in the upper bass/lower mids? It sounds a bit thick in the middle ...

If you don't have it, I would definitely recommend Waves' Kramer Master Tape plug in for some added analog warmth and fatness; I think it would complement the track well. You can get a free 7 day download from Waves if you own an iLok.

Otherwise, there is no right and wrong, and I don't hear anything untoward on this mix at all.

You got the Rokits?! Awesome dude!

And innerdream: that piece is awesome! I agree with everdrone on the vocals and bassdrums but this sure is very good stuff!

P.S. Merry Xmas everyone!

Re: Tried some new mixing techniques - honest feedback appreciated.

Twighlight and P.A. thank you both for the CC and I'm glad you dig the tune. I'll work on it today and try and straighten all that out! Cheers!

Re: Tried some new mixing techniques - honest feedback appreciated.

I think I have the low end sorted now, check it out if you have a moment. I put a low cut filter on the synths at 390hz and rolled off the bass above 540hz that opened a big hole in the middle now and cleaned up some of the mud.Out of Control - Demo

I'll get on the vocals now and add some spice. Thanks again everyone.

I'm not normally a fan of the "Techno" style, but this is actually very good. It kind of harkens back to the early Peter Gabriel days. Overall, I think the instrument mix is very good; there are a few places here and there where I think that you could bump the energy up a bit more with some more elaborate drum fills and cymbals, but I also get that it's already amped up and that the bass drum is kind of a lead instrument. Contrary to what some of the other people have stated, I'd like to hear the vocals brought up a bit more, and agreeing with Twilight here, that some pitch shifting might be in order. A vocoder would add some interesting bits as well. Just my two cents... Nice job, in any case!

Really? This sounds more like The Smiths, Morrisey, Tears For Fears, Jesus & Mary Chain, Depeche Mode or other 80s New Wave to me, not like PG at all. And how is Peter Gabriel Techno?! If anything, his early music is closer to world music ...

It's definitely getting there! Once I get a mix blocked out, it usually takes 7 or 8 tweaks until I'm satisfied enough to abandon it.

One other suggestion: High pass the guitar track at 100-150Hz and give it a goose at 3.4k to make it pop a bit ...

Well, it probably DOES sound like that to you, but I hear Gabriel. I don't hear the Tears for Fears, Jesus & Mary Chain, or Depeche Mode anywhere in there. And I never said that Peter Gabriel is Techno, but you'll have to admit that some of his early material with heavy drum and droning chords certainly suggest that. Does that mean you're wrong? No. Does that mean I'm wrong? No. He asked for a critique. I gave it to him. My opinion means no more than yours and vice versa. What he chooses to do with our input is up to him.

Re: Tried some new mixing techniques - honest feedback appreciated.

I definitely listen to everyone's opinion because I'm too close to it to be objective at this point. I have tweaked things per your suggestions, thank you all for giving me something to listen for.

All the guitars are high passed at 140hz I purposely kept them on the dark side because they're amp sims and to my ears they don't sound that convincing when they're brighter. I went through the vocals and tightened them up a bit pitch wise, raised the level a touch and eq'd them slightly different then added a few delayed vocal bits, I think I'll continue to work on them for a bit. I don't have a vocoder plugin anymore but I have some other tricks I can use.

Thanks again everyone!

Version 2.2 is much better. Your new " Technique " is producing a much tighter mix and dynamic range response. Dig it.:cool2:

right on! they are amazing, I just sit and listen to all my recordings. I have the krk 10s sub and it is killer.

I like the bass drum eqed that way. the vocals sound great! I was trying to say that the vocals are dominant - many lyrics and minimal instrumental only parts. top shelf mixing job. I would process stuff a little more on vocal effects - diff textures and stuff for that type of music. I would do special eq stuff with the drums in the breakdowns where the eq/ambiance/echo levels are way diff, then come back to the normal eq.

All and all this is really awesome, lots of talent!! fun stuff :friday:

great breakdowns :14:

Re: Tried some new mixing techniques - honest feedback appreciated.

Man, it's sounding great. Fun to hear it progress through its various stages ...

Re: Tried some new mixing techniques - honest feedback appreciated.

Oh, thanks for the video link, too. Looking forward to watching!

Re: Tried some new mixing techniques - honest feedback appreciated.

Cool track.. I dig it. There's some modern sounding stuff there, but also a mid 80's kinda thing with the way those vocals sit in the track against the drums, keys, and other parts. I hear some bits of sustainy guitar parts that really like also. I'm a big fan of the squelchy/filtered/envelope keyboard stuff on a few of the breaks. And the piano breakdown with the delay repeats is really nice. I've always liked that kind of Pink Floyd thing with notes that keep going. You might put a bit of that piano echoing thing in your track as an intro.

Re: Tried some new mixing techniques - honest feedback appreciated.

And I'm following you on soundcloud now as well.
