Triple Shot - WITHOUT pickup rings

Is it possible to get the Triple Shot switching system WITHOUT the pickup rings? It looks like the switches are on a bezel mounted to the top of the pickup ring. The reason I'm interested in this is that I'm building a guitar (HHH) that won't use traditional pickup bezels, but one custom made mount for all 3 pickups. I'd love to use the Triple Shot wiring system on it, without having to drill a ton of holes for little mini-toggles...

Thanks,

Well, I imagine it would be possible to buy Triple Shots, then carefully remove the components and chop them into your custom mega ring.

Welcome to the forum.

As ImmortalSix points out, it is physically possible to extract the PCB from a Triple Shot HB mounting surround. This deals with your "no traditional mounting surrounds" requirement. The tricky part will be your "no holes" requirement.

The TS micro switches are about as compact as they can practically be without becoming too small to operate onstage. If you do not want micro switches poking through holes in a flat pickguard, the only alternative that springs to mind is mounting them on the back edge of a raised pickguard - like one of Jimmy Page's favourite Gibson Les Paul guitars.

Re: Triple Shot - WITHOUT pickup rings

I'm sure that if you contacted the Custom Shop with your request they could build it... probably do all the wiring for you so its drop in. Only a question of $$$...

Re: Triple Shot - WITHOUT pickup rings

There won't be a pickguard on the guitar, nor any traditional mounting rings, but a pair of "rails" that the pickups will mount to. The size of the switches is fine. I just didn't want to have a bunch of mini-toggles down at the control cavity. This wiring setup is PERFECT for what I've wanted this guitar to do, so if I need to redesign some strictly cosmetic features to incorporate these, no big deal...

Re: Triple Shot - WITHOUT pickup rings

Just my two bits worth. I bought a pair of triple shots and planned on using the micro switches for some different functions (phase a neck pickup, series two humbuckers, split a 3 wire neck pickup). What I found out when I got them is that the switches are not designed to be used independently. There are traces from pole to pole across from switch to switch. The 4 wires are not necessarily connected two to each switch. I suppose it is possible to carefully solder to each pole and then scratch out the traces that you don't want, but that much soldering to a plastic switch just seems to me to be a recipe for disaster.

They would be awesome to do exactly what they are designed for tho (series/parallel/single pole 1, single pole 2).

Yes you can remove the circuit boards from the rings quite easily, but there's 2 boards: one with the switches connected to the other via ribbon cable where the pickups connect to.

So you'll have a visible ribbon cable in your rail idea, unless it's a hollow rail.
The switchboard is 1/4" wide, but the contact board is 3/8" wide.

However, you can get creative with the wiring, such as strip off the contact board and wire the switchboard directly to the pickup, then the pickup's conductors to the contact board down in the control cavity.

Re: Triple Shot - WITHOUT pickup rings

Thanks DrNewcenstein! I can easily hollow out the rail that I'll mount the pickups to, enough to conceal the ribbon cable.

Does anybody have a really good close up pic of these and/or a good picture of the bottom of one?

Thanks!
