I was just curious what that kind of work would cost. 400$ actually seems low to me, given the effort involved.
 
I told the client this was a starter price.... He has the habit of adding more work as the project rolls. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he suddenly wanted an ebony board and new tuning machines. He was talking about sending the seafoam green P-bass body to Texas for a complete refin, but he thought better of it. The guy is made of money.
 
That’s a good client to have. If he wants a scalped fretboard with stainless steel jumbo frets, that’s what you do. I’m curious how the rod looks under the fretboard myself. Take pics to share.
 
Heads up on fingerboard removal for the future..if you're certain that the truss rod disconnect is on the nut end, you can split the fingerboard underneath the first fret and just remove that small section of fingerboard.

Learned this trick from a luthier who tried it on a 63 p bass... Worked absolutely perfect, and considering the split was under the fret, it's pretty much invisible.
 
I've done that on 335's when popping the neck out of the body. Pull the binding back a bit so you don't cut it, and once it's reinstalled you'd never know the neck had been off. Works like a champ!
 
I figured he'd at least pop for a Warmoth, seeing as how he's spent tens of thousands with them and was super happy with all of their stuff. I'm glad I had other things to do before I started on the old neck.
 
I think they price the replacement parts such that it's almost more economical to buy a new guitar. Otherwise, people would just buy parts and make their own and fewer people would buy fully assembled guitars.
 
I had looked at replacement necks before when I was looking at making a bass before. Fender was always the more expensive option. And not surprising either.
 
When it's oem there seems to be significant mark-up. Meinl in Germany sells replacement Ibanez necks (only to authorized dealers and the like) and many are also $$. I mean, a Jem 7VWH neck (like Vai's main) or for some Prestige models is almost 1k.
 
Yeah... I wonder if it's also connected with the fact that there are no Japan made Jems anymore. No Pia necks yet on the website.

You can buy a complete Ibanez for that (or less), and it'll be very good!
 
Yeah, the Fender replacement necks are about twice the cost of other mfr replacement necks.

I do think that he made the right decision to buy a replacement neck rather than have his old neck pulled apart and "rebuilt". I still think that I could have fixed his old neck/truss rod.
