Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please
I have one of John's Ts9's and have had it on my board since the day I got it. It will never leave my board. That typed I also have a Reissue TS9 that I use with certain amps. The TS9 that John modded I use with my Bogner Shiva and the drive that it offers in the clean channel is actually better then then the drive of the gain channel. Its awesome!!
Now the TS9 RI that is stock I use with my Deluxe Reverb. Johns mods make the TS9's bottom much stronger and the pedal is more gainy then the stock pedal..... now any body who has played thru a DR knows that the bottom is weak so you don't want to push the bottom too hard (unless you have to right speaker in the amp to handle it).\
I also have a Monroe drive made by Xssive. This pedal is a TS808 on steroids. Even though I don't use or need all the features this has it is a great OD pedal. I use this with a very special amp(Komet 60).
The point of all of this is ovedrive pedals work well with a really good tube amp. They take what the amp is doing and it enhances it in some way. Much of the advice that you are getting here is about the overdrive pedals. All the ones mentioned are good, but what is really going to make the difference is the amp. Rather then buying a Hotrod I would put a little more cash into the amp and get a silverface Super Reverb, Vibrolux, or a Pro Reverb. The ones without a master volume would be my choice. That is going to make a much bigger impact on the tone then the pedal. The whole idea is to "Drive" the amp harder and in all honesty the hotrods don't compare with the older Fenders. Fender has rarely made amd amp that had channel switching ability that sounded great in all aspects of its design. The Fenders that are known for their tone are the tweeds and the blackface Fenders.. A early silver face is in many ways as good as a blackface, but are a lot cheaper and will sound better then anything new you can buy today. The pedal that you plug into it will simply drive the amp harder. Thats what SRV did ( he used both TS9 & 808's) He did most of his early work with a Super Reverb and later used a Vibroverb. He also used a Marshall Plexi for most of his cleans suprisingly.
