TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

Great info, guys (especially SPD97). What a veritable quagmire of info on those pedals!

Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

John, I have nothing but support for what you do, I just wanted to offer that 1. You can buy cheaper TS's out there and live with the tone for awhile until you are sure you want to change it. 2. There's lots of info out there about modding, so if you like to tinker, go for it. ...I have no problem at all with modding pedals, or someone doing them. I have a problem with the idea that certain pedals 'suck' if they aren't modded. This just isn't true. The fact that Ibanez charges and gets over $150 for a Tube Screamer is proof of this. I am positive your customers are happy, and your work is great- I am sure people are sincere in their reviews. I get lots of students, who read about 'pedal mods' and think that every distortion pedal they buy has to be modded to sound good. This is just misinformation. I'd rather they save their money or learn how to do it themselves. I have heard lots of TS mods, some of them good, some with very little difference. With my playing style, and my gear, I love the way they sound stock and see no reason to change. Just an alternate perspective, thats all.

Cool and thanks for posting...I respect you for your genuine opinions..I totally agree with you that not all pedals need to be modded buddy..One of my favorite pedals that I've not modded,is the Marshall JackHammer....The problem I have in my case and because I'm primarily a strat player with Tube Screamers is a lack of low end, gain, and sustain...There is alot of info on the net about how to mod pedals but they don't show you the whole story....I started modding pedals along time ago for myself because of the problems I just mentioned...It's also important to know that the $30 I charge to mod any pedal the way I do is not about the money as much as it's been a nice service I've done to help forum members...Modding pedals is very tedious work.. :32: Mincer.....I never actually told you that pedals suck if they aren't modded....I said that it's been my opinion that none of the stock TS5s and TS7s sound as good "to me" stock because they lack the balls and overall fullness of tone that the modded pedals offer....The reissue 808 though pricey sounds great right out of the box....Can the pedal be improved on further...You bet it can! The thing is,what's better? Right..A stock Tube Screamer is very creamy as is when I use my Les Paul or my SG with Duncan pickups, but seems like it lacks something when I use a strat with single coils...SRV's 808 was not a stock 808 from my readings and findings....KWS also uses tweaked out Tube Screamers,so I guess the mods suit the strat players moreso than the modern humbucking PRS guys? I'm not stereotyping but it may explain some of the mindset.....Anyway...I'm not losing any sleep over whether I Mod 1 pedal or 100 really....It's just a fun hobby and now that I realize you weren't and aren't jabbing at me....All is really good....Thanks for posting....I don't get into your store much with all the competition south and east of you,but next time I do,I'll be sure to look you up....Musician's Friend is pretty easy and conveinant also.....Anyway....Be cool bro!

Oh I never meant to imply that you said they suck if they are stock...but just browse through the newsgroups and other boards and you will get what I mean. Lots of eople doing mods because they read that KWS did it (in fact I saw him live and hated his tone). Since I don't use single-coils, and I use a mid/bass sounding amp (a Blue Angel) I have tons of low end. The $30 you charge is very reasonable, and look foward to checking out your mods one day. I have a TS5 that I either have to sell or mod to sound like a TS7 with the hot switch on.

Cool buddy....Glad we're on the same page....You're better off sticking with the TS7 for it's better case, cool locking knobs, and the boost switch and mod your TS5 for a very singing, sweet, warm lead tone....The TS5 is warmer and sweeter...The TS7 is a bit more aggressive like a TS9 with better note articulation...The TS5 and the TS7 don't really react the same...I do some tweaks to the TS9 side of the TS7 and just because of those mods, the boosted tone is improved automatically....See, Boogies never lack lows and gain as a rule....I had a Tremoverb setup for awhile but I was never happy with the fuzzy, buzzy preamp gain of the Dual Rec series(Ed at Encore had one and he sold his also) :) ...Boogies are loaded with cascaded preamp gain and I need clarity so my styles lean towards Marshall and Fender tones...My age and my classic rock/blues styles dicatate what works for me...I'm not saying Boogies don't articulate(I Love old Boogies..MK1 etc..) but I'm pretty much a Fender/Marshall player on the early tones of these amps...One of these days we'll hook up I'm sure....Brian,John,and Mike, and Ed all know me...

Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

Yeah, I hate most Boogies...the Blue Angel has no master volume, Class A, and is a 2-6v6s/4-EL84 (you can choose which power tubes or use both sets) amp. Think 'dark Deluxe' and you got it. I keep it on the 6v6 setting for about 18 watts, and it is glorious. I think this is why I love the Tube Screamer so much- any other pedal turns it to mush.

I Love that amp...I remember that one being one of the amps I really wanted both during the time I bought my T/verb head and selling the T/Verb head...Those Blue Angels and all Boogies retain their value and are still pretty pricey....I really like my Cyber Twin alot now that I've had it for like 3 years and have it dialed in really cool...Again not for the metal player, but for Classic Rock/Blues and clean playing, the CT has really solved alot of versatility problems for me when we gig out...I had my CT before Encore ever got their very first one in fact! :) Version 1.2......

Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

RID....I own one of these pedals and it's cool looking....The circuit is virtually identical to the Tube Screamer with the exception of the eq in that the ValveTone is actually thinner in it's presentation and it tries to replicate the vibe of an AC30 Class A amp....I tweaked my ValveTone and noticed things missing in the tone control circuit that the Tube Screamer has...But it's so close otherwise to a tube screamer, and so is the Boss SD1 and many other pedals out there....Fulltone is another one and the Jeckyl and Hyde...
Yep they are fairly much in family these pedals, what OP-amp does the Vox have??
The Vox is more crunchy if I remember correctly.
Nah your probally right on the money with RI TS.

hey guys,
while i was dreaming last night
i came up with the idea of implanting the guts of my ts9 into my strat guitar (music man sillhouette special)
coz i always use the pedal with that guitar
do any players do this? is it stupid?
i kno the guy from Muse has a fuzz factory in his guitars, but all his guitars are pretty whaked out

is it a worthwhile thing to do? or should i just shutup ;)

Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

Well theres not much room inside a Silo Special, for one. You'd have to do some routing. Why not just turn the pedal on when you use that guitar?
Also, a great mod on the Silo Special is to wire another pickguard with different pickups. Ernie Ball wires their pickguards to 'snap' on on using a special connector, so there is no soldering. You can wire up a pickguard and change them out in a few minutes.

Check this out....There's a guy on She Bay that is selling a circuit board of the TS circuit that you mount in your guitar...I think the circuit replaces a pot or something...Do a search over there under Tube Screamer and you'll see it..Looks like a cool idea if it works...

RID....My ValveTone has the RC4558P chip in it and I left that chip in my pedal..Lately this TIRC4558P has been my favorite chip..It retains the note clarity I need....I hate when my tone buries behind too much gain! :32:

Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

Oh ok, well we use LF347 in our HDB overdrives, plus Motorola MC3079(hmm I forgot the number I think)
They both have 4 op-amps and have excellent soundqualities.
Hmm we have a TS-10 at work, maybe I should mod that little bugger :burnout:

Rid....The TS10 has more crap inline with the opamp and the output section that has to be bypassed...This is my least favorite in the TS line and takes longer to mod....

Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

Hahaha, I feel like such a noob compared to u guys! im glad i use this forum as my main one cuz i get the best help from this one.... Anyways here is my Tube Screamer dilemma i hope u can help...

Im not worried much about the tone ima get out of it, because I as far as I have heard, it is great and I listen to lots of SRV... Its whether it will have enough drive at times, you kno? cuz sometimes i gotta turn the gain up and let loose... I heard that the TS-808 few flaws includes the fact that it has limited gain...

I still dont kno what amplifier im gonna get, and right now im fighting between the Marshall DSL, Peavey Triple XXX, and Fender Hot Rod... Different amps, yes, but the thing is that the DSL and XXX both will have the extra headroom in case i need to turn that preamp up, you kno? They will also have the lowend available as well... I tried the DSL and liked it, but never tired the XXX, tho ive heard clips and think it is not bad!

I've played the Hot Rod, which has a great clean, but the drive channels turned me off a bit... I figured that the way I could solve this problem was by getting a Tube Screamer and use it in conjuction with the Hot Rods 2 overdrive modes... Im just worried that it will sound funny as I am assuming that its a possibility that the amps drive and Tube Screamers won't compliment each other.

I suppose I could also buy another Tube Screamer and use one to boost the other TS... Would that be a good idea? Or how bout that one Boss SD 1 I heard sounds similar to the tube screamer? Change the stock speakers? A combo of waht i said?

What do u think?

thanks for the help thus far

Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

I would go with the DSL or the XXX, and use the TS for more subtle overdrive stuff.
I have never played a Fender Hotrod I liked, could never dial out that excessive bottom.

Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

I Like the tone and both channels of the DSL Marshall....The XXX just has too much preamp gain for my tastes...That DSL Marshall flattered me when it came out years ago through it's 4x12 cabinet..I'm partial to Marshall though and I'll bias towards them everytime..Avoid the TSL,I don't think the tone is as good and it has way too much extra crap that most of us can live without....Just more stuff to go wrong on the TSL series..

Re: TS-808 or TS-808 Reissue: CLIP please

im definitly gonna do some serious time at the Guitar Center or any guitar store to figure this out guys.... but my problem is a big one. Do I want to go clean and use pedal distortion? Or do i want less clean and go with amp distortion like a Marshall DSL or Peavey XXX? AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! It frikin tears me up inside

lord have mercy *sob*:(

thanks for the help i gotta figure this out some how....
