TSL tone stack question

Hi all,

I'm still trying to dial in my TSL 602, and have noticed something strange. On the Clean channel, if I turn the tone controls all the way down, it completely mutes the output. Is this normal? Also, the amp seems incredibly bassy all around, especially on the lead channel. However, turning the treble and the presence up tends to give me an occasional whine/feedback noise. This unit is from 1999 if that matters.

Welcome to the forum!

Awesome! Another TSL602 user here besides me! :friday:

Yes, if you turn down the gain knob on the clean channel you get no sound. Not sure if thats 'normal' but thats what mine does too.

As for your bass problem, its sounds like you're still running the stock "Wolverine" speakers is that correct? I wasn't happy at all with the stock speaker so I switched mine for Celestion V30's. That greatly improved the overall tone. Bass was more rounded and defined, and the V30's removed that sterile 'ice pick' sound in the high's.

I don't think boosting the treb or presence will help you fix the bass tones. Have you tried experimenting with the 'tone shift' and 'deep' buttons? The 'deep' button will add extra bass to your tone....
The 'tone shift' will scoop out your mids...

I usually leave them both off...

Hope that helps! :1:

No, on the clean, even with the clean gain cranked, cutting all the tone knobs kills the sound. I'd have expected some sort of muffled output, but none at all?

Also, I've been running it straight up, no shift, no deep.(either button just makes things worse.) Having the crunch/lead bass above 4 is intolerable, as is treble below 8, mid doesn't seem to have any real effect. I'm not fully sure, but I think the amp is unmodified.

As far as speakers go, I was thinking about changing them out later, if I couldn't tweak things enough to make it work stock. Have you ever tried a hybrid setup, like say a V30 and G12T-75? My goal basically is to have the three channels be a generic clean, smooth classic-to-hard rock, and then face-ripping metal. Or am I asking too much of this amp?

I added a Marshall 2x12 extension cab that contains a Celestion Heritage and Celestion Vintage speakers. Combined with the V30's in the combo, I get a great classic Marshall sound that turns into a modern, heavier distortion on the lead channel.

I havent' tried it with the G12 75's but I hear alot people like that combo. I'd feel safe trying combining boths speakers...

Here's a pic of my rig:

I think thats common with certain tone stacks I've played other amps where turning the tone knobs to zero like cuts all of that frequency (Silverface Twin I played once did this).

Hmming, going to have to try this out tomorrow morning on my TSL601
