Tube Amp for Apartment?

Re: Tube Amp for Apartment?

I think a modeling amp might be a better choice in that environment than a tube amp. I love tube amps...but for your situation, maybe a little Line 6 Spyder or something similar would be a better choice. Seymour uses one..or so I've heard!

The only thing about a 5 watt amp is it's hard to get a full clean tone...even at apartment volumes. I love my little 5 watt Princeton and Champ amps...but not for clean tone. I like to crank them for an overdriven tone...and a cranked 5 watt amp in an apartment is probably going to be to loud.

I'd suggest the Blues Jr or the Pro Jr from Fender. Really decent Fender cleans and decent blues/classic rock OD at reasonable levels. I had the Blues Jr for a while, nice little amp.

I'd recommend trying the new 5 watt Crate amp. I haven't played one, but I've heard good things about them and they're under $300. (only available at Guitar Center and Musician's Friend I think) If you're willing to spend a little more, there's the Bad Cat Mini Cat for around $600. The Blues Junior sounds good too, but you may need pedals to get some distortion going. Also, even 15 watts cranked is still really loud. Not even that much less than a 50 watter.

Another option is an attenuator. This will only work well with an all tube amp, not a hybrid like what it sounds like you have, because its really only useful in order to push the power tubes. So, either attenutator or really low watt amps are the way to go in an apartment.

If you're using your Valvetronix, make sure you use 1 of the 3 OD models with every amp model you choose.....even clean ones. If you don't use any OD models, the amp does sound a bit sterile. Just keep the OD volume high and the gain lower, just to add some punch to the models.
Also, it's very possible that the stock speaker sucks. I use the head with a Bogner 2-12, so the amp has the benefit of real speakers.
Before you give up on it, maybe you should look into a new speaker.

I vote the Crate V58 as well. Looking at one for myself, actually...

I don't want to get into modding a little amp like this. It's funny, I just came back from my guitar teacher and he was using a Polytone Brute, which is so damn warm sounding at low volumes. However, he advised that it's pretty much a jazz amp and doesn't take well to dirt. Oh well. I may look into the Crate. To be continued...
