Tube death symptoms? Anybody?

I showed up to today's jam with my bandmaster, and after i got it warmed up, it sounded like ASS. It barely had any volume or headroom, and to be heard i had to put it up at around 7, when a few weeks back it sounded fine at 5 sparkling clean.

The bass is very farty, highs are gargly, and hardly any headroom. The tubes are about a year and a half or more because those are the ones that were in there when i bought it from this dude, they're mesa STR 6L6's, in other words, relabeled rubys?

I experienced similar problems with my peavey classic a few years back. After a pretty loud gig, it sounded gargly and farty with no headroom, and i replaced the power tubes and it was great again. Could this be the case with my bandmaster, it seems about due to die anyway, and i have NOS philips 7581A's in the mail so im just in time i guess.

Ya tubes for sure....

but on a side note my 65 Fender Deluxe had a problem with a capasitor or something else that was allowing some higher then normall voltage to the tubes and it wore the tubes out right quick....! It sounded like dung until i got that fixed!

When you play single string lines, does it sometimes sound like two notes are coming out of the speaker at the same time; same pitch, but one clean and one distorted?

hmm, i didnt really listen that closely, all i knew was that it sounded like crap.

It did not saturate though, the notes did sound a bit semi clean, and very nasty. Again, volume was way up at around 8.

What is that double note thing a symptom of?
