I started a thread called "amp choice for the poor" but now i need help with my tubes. so here is what I said in the old thread......
Lets put it this way, the gig we just played was MAYBE 200 ft long and 25, 50 feet wide. The audience was right in front of us and they always tell us we need to play louder! How can this be?? My other guitarist has a H and K 120 watt amp he only has at 6 live, hybrid amp. I'm going to get the tubes checked out as something is obviously wrong, friday at our next gig I am going to run it through my 4/12 cab and see it that helps projection of sound for now. Now!! I have NEVER had to mess with tubes so I need serious help. How much is it gonna cost to get it checked out and then how much to get the tubes repaced? It's a rebiased BV that had 6l6's in it but uses EL34's instead now. What tubes are best for this sound.....I like a lot of gain but it needs to be very defined and clear, a ton of sustain wanted, can take a lot of use, saturates plenty. Help me out guys, im very new to this!

Re: Tube help please!

You guys need a pa. Gone are the days of a bunch of stacks behind your head(thank god) For most bands a 1/2 stack is plenty. Anything more than that and your sound man will kill you. Basically what i found(my opinion) was get a good comfortable volume where you can hear everything okay and then crank up the pa for the audience. The lower you can get the stage volume (USUALLY) the better it sounds out front.

Re: Tube help please!

Get a set of JJ EL-34's and make sure the 2 pre tubes furthest from the power tubes have something good, like GT12AX7C's, Sovtek LPS, or Electroharmonix 12AX7's.
You may not need to rebias so just pop the new tubes in, but if you do, have a pro do it for around $30. You don't need to bias preamp tubes, so you can pop any 12AX7's in there.
