Tube Mic Preamp running into a solid state amp?

How would a tube mic preamp sound if I was to run in as part of the FX chain into a solid state power amp?

Basically like this:

Guitar - Tube Mic Preamp - Digitech RP21D - Solid State Power Head Unit

or

Guitar - Digitech RP21D - Tube Mic Preamp - Solid State Power Head Unit

I've heard people talk about using these in their chain and saying it gave their sound a lot of warmth. Any opinions?

I do hook up a Presonus TubePre to my Marshall MG100HDFX once a while and I do get very good results. Since different people prefer different sounds, I suggest you go try it out from a dealer and see if you like it. However, I think it may not be a good idea to put your FX pedal ahead of a tube preamp as you mentioned in your second option. A preamp should go ahead of everything except your instrument.

The preamp AFTER the digital modeller will warm the modeller up... If you put the tube preamp BEFORE the digital modeller, the modller will suck some of the desired tones out by digitizing the tone!

Since tone is subjective, try it both ways, and see what you like!

My concern is that the output of the FX pedal may blow the preamp up, not because of tone reasons. It is not designed to take high wattage inputs.

A preamp has low wattage... hence the necessity for a power amp! And FX processors are in essence digital pre-amps themselves... I have done both with recording and find that the tube pre-amp AFTER the my GNX3 sounds best!!!

Actually my RP21D is pretty sweet. Alot of the sounds on it are very analog sounding and the new Sovtek 12AX7-LPS I threw in there has made a huge difference in the quality in the preamp. I can get distortions ranging from ridiculous scooped death metal to ballsy Marshall gain. I just love all the features this thing has. Simplicity is what I like best.
