Tube Observations!

Okay guys here is my first attempt at "reviewing" tubes.

My Hot Rod Deluxe ( which will be abbreviated as HRDx henceforth), came stock with GT6L6B's which are nothing more than re-labelled SOVTEK 5881's. Here is what eurotubes had to say about them.....

"Sovtek 5881WXT: Let’s see, the first word that comes to mind is "cardboard". As for describing the lows, mids and highs, three words will do it, Flabby, harsh and piercing. This tube is also sold by G.T. and re-labeled GT6L6B. The 5881/6L6WGC is the same tube with a disc base."

I couldn't agree anymore, so I will add nothing and leave it at that

Within days, one of the GT6L6B's died, and the store gave me some new tubes for replacement. I received a pair of GT6L6-S's which are FAR better tubes. After I installed and re-biased, my clean headroom was raised, which allows me to play clean at louder volumes. The tone had more of a fat bottom, the mids cut through well, and the highs were a bit piercing. I toned them down a bit with the treble knob, and this thing sounds like a true Fender amp. The drive "channels" were affected by the raised headroom, but that is actually an advantage. With the 6L6B's, the distortion channel sounded like poop. The drive channel sounded harsh and muddy, and when you hit the "more drive" things only worsened. I use pedals, anyway, so that is water under the bridge. With the 6L6-S tubes, the drive channel sounded like the clean channel, only it broke up early. If you turned the gain to aobut 12 o'clok, things got distorted in a good way. It would push the evelope of hi-gain tones. On "more Drive" the thing sang like an overdriven tube amp should. A beefy quality was lacking, but I figured it was the 12" driver crammed into the small cab. Overall, the tubes were very nice. However, at $52 for a matched pair, you could buy better for less!

As such, I ordered a pair of Tesla (JJ) 6L6GCS's from the Tube Depot for $28.95. After installing and re-biasing my amp, the clean headroom was raised EVEN MORE!!! The bottom fattened up in a noticeable manner, the mids were buttery smooth, but still cut through the mix well. The highs were brightened as well, but a little twist and things are nearly perfect. The drive channels responded well to these tubes. The "drive" allowed me to get some SRV tones all the way up to some mild distortion. Othern than rolling the tone pots back on the axe, I didn't alter the tone. When I hit the "more drive" switch the gain was amazing. I can actually use it to solo. There was great sustain, and the notes were more articulate than with the previous tubes. I can see me using the drive channels with a little more dialing in a setting that will allow me to use all 3 channels with the footswitch!

I only changed the output tubes, but clearly noticed these differences. I am going to go ahead and purchase some 12AX7's and 12AT7's from the Tube Depot and do some experimentation. Once I get those in I will submit a review as well. My point is that if by changing the output tubes, my tonal color was improved, then these are some excellent tubes.

Hope this served you tube amp guys well,
Allen

Re: Tube Observations!

A side point on the Tube Depot..... I ordered some Series 715 Orange Drop Capacitors rated at 0.022uf for $0.80 and received six Series 716 OD Caps of the same rating that were priced at $1.35 each. I called to ensure there were no compatibility issues and spoke to an employee (not a customer service rep). He pulled both caps and looked into them while I was on the phone. The 716's have a more precise tolerance, hence the price difference. He apologized for the mix-up and offered to send a t-shirt and a discount on my next order. Not to bad, since I got the better caps for the lower price, AND I get a Tee and discount. Needless to say, Tube Depot will be handling all my tube business in the future. I definitley recommend them to the forum members who need to replace/upgrade tubes. Also, I orderd Monday morning and the tubes shipped right after 3"00pm Monday afternoon. I received them Wednesday, and that was the normal shipping after my tubes backtracked to Memphis!

Re: Tube Observations!

sounds like that worked out pretty well for ya. the gt6l6s are the jj tesla tubes, maybe the same ones (6l6gc) that you had but there can be differences. what rating were the gt6l6s?

Re: Tube Observations!

Hey Jeremy,

I understand that GT does not manufacture Tubes, they merely match and re-label Actually they just stick their label on top of the old one. You can usually see who made it. It may very well be possible that there are GT borrowed JJ's, but there are no other markings present (unlike the 6L6B's which had SOVTEK 5881WXT on them).

At any rate, the GT's that were compensated to me by the store are rated at 4. That is earlier breakup than I wanted, but truly it worked out for the best. If really smack a string, the amp recreates that with a little hair added to the tone. I have really played more now that I have a much more responsive amp and desirable tone emmiting from that amp!!!

Later,

Re: Tube Observations!

I completely agree with you on the JJ's. I stuck a full retube in (bought the set from Eurotubes), and I must say, both sets of tubes sound mucho better than the stock tubes. They actually sound like a Fender now! The JJ's are my choice of tubes now. I would suggest that you stick a set of JJ's for the preamp too. They improve the tone a lot as well.

Good to hear about your business with Tube Depot. I've never bought anything from them, but I'll be sure to keep them in mind next time I'm looking for something tube amp related.

Re: Tube Observations!

Add-on, the box for the GT tubes was rated at 4, but the base was rated at 5. The JJ's were rated at 10!!! That would explain the difference in tonality and output, if in fact the GT's were borrowed from JJ with a new paint job.

Can you believe that someone gets away with slapping a sticker on tubes and doubling the price?!?!?!

Things that make you go, hmmmmm?

Re: Tube Observations!

I'd say my favorite stuff right now is JJ EL-34's and E-34L's, Svetlana =C= 6L6's, and GT12AX7C's for gainy amps, and GT12AX7M's for midgain amps, and on clean amps, I just experiment till I find the right ones.

Re: Tube Observations!

Has no one else tried the TAD 6L6WGBs yet? Good gravy, they're awesome!

Re: Tube Observations!

Here is some more FYI....

All three stock pre-amp tubes in my HRDx are SOVTEK 12AX7WA's. Here is what the tube store's review was on them.....

"... They don't have the best sound in this type, being prone to the occasional pop or tick. The sound quality lacked any real character but was acceptable. If the budget is tight, their affordability will be attractive....."

Well, if that is the case, then I have 2 noteworthy points.....

1) I have nothing to compare them to, but for my own ears while playing. I can't wait to hear what this amp will sound like when I get some higher quality pre-amp tubes installed. I didn't think it could sound much better, but we will see when this next shipment of tubes comes in......

2) Anyone in the market for a modest output tube amp should jump on the Hot Rod Deluxe. It sounds great stock, and it apparently comes with the cheapest tubes availabel. Aside from the tube upgrades, there are MANY simple mods available for those who would like to experiment with their amps for a desired tone. Not to mention this thing is LOUD for a 40-watt amp! It is also full of charater, takes pedals well, and is not too heavy for lugging around. With a little experimentation, the drive "channels" are actually usable. I have been getting some tones that come pretty close to SRV, Los Lonely Boys, and other screaming Fender tones.

This has been the best $350 I have EVER spent!!
