Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

I dont know about Blackstar Drive, but Dist was definetly worth it.

As far as non tube ones go, Im would point at cheap Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive V2. With all the attention that V1 had when people found out what it really was, the V2 holds on its own as a bit different pedal. Then for more drive Im with Maxon OD-820, which I also think is often overlooked. That also reminds me that there are some Maxons with tubes in them, but I have no idea if they are any good.

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

Im not american, but i think Mike Fuller deserves to be rewarded for designing and manufacturing the OCD pedal. It sounds great and is unlike all the other od pedals on the market, using a completely original circuit. All of the Fulltone pedals are built to last and are built with pride, care and attention to detail. His is a home grown business that deserves to be supported....
Then some cynical marketing executive has the idea of ripping off Mikes ideas, having them copied and manufatured in China in plastic cases. Well done Danelectro.

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

In metal cases with true bypass.
Well thats Drive V1 for you, I was initialy more interested in Transparent Overdrive V1 which was Paul Cochrane's Timmy. Then again there used to be some accusations regarding originality of Fulltone's effects to begin with. I dont remember details, but at least there was a case with some booster being copy of something, and similiarity of OCD to one of VooDoo Labs Overdrives. I will trace old FSB's threads about it later.

Copies are integral part of this market I guess. EHX do copy (Metal Muff), Boss do copy (FZ-2), is there even a single effect maker who never copied anything? Coping butique effect can be seen as more morally wrong, but isnt that just because we can see a picture of person who makes them, while big corporation doesnt have a face? And is Fulltone still small butique maker at all, since I can just go to a guitar shop in Poland and buy OCD like it is TS808 or Big Muff? Anyway Im sorry, I dont really want to start this discussion again, as it was probably already done few times here as well. If someone wants a butique pedal with premium NOS parts in it, he will buy from Mike or Paul anyway, while their designs became more accessible for people who would never bought them anyway. Personaly I picked V2 instead of V1's, cause I liked it better.

it is a shame the Damage Control tube pedals are no longer made, very nice tones from smooth to "in your face distortion"...

This one:

but, you can't get it -- they don't make them anymore (I got lucky!)

Eh really...all new and never done before....ok....

haha and I am the Queen of England ;)

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

okay fair enough ....professional jealousy and all that....but at least its not yet another tubescreamer, ds1 or rat clone! lol. Theres only so many ways to rejig an amplification/clipping circuit.
Think about it in musical terms...take the chords C, am, F and G .....write a song....your song is original even if the chords have been used before. Thats totally different than playing a cover.
So yeah - i like Mike Fullers work (among other pedal builders). I even like the fulldrive which we all know is based on a tubescreamer circuit. You can rubbish him if you like .... but in doing so you are really diminishing the value of your own work in producing high quality product for a discerning market. So, if youd rather we all bought the imported knock offs of products like his (or yours) then let us know.

Eh what fu...are you talking about??
:D
Just pointed out that the guy did not invent flying saucers either!!!

Nor does he really stand out that much either, he is just good at getting his stuff out....
There is the true trick hidden!

You can speculate all you want about it, and it will come down to that...(discerning market, more like feeding a bunch of sheep is an more apt description)
:D Heh

And please no putting words into me mouth, I have a big dislike for assumptions...
;)
I'm not rubbishing anyone???
What would be the point of that????!!!!!

And what I do is of little importance to this!

There is like a gazzilion pedal wankers out there.....trying to cut a piece for themselves.....with their little part of the same cake everybody and their grandmum is eating of!

His stuff is as unique as the rest, and ours....very unique....extremely one of a kind....all by it self.....never heard before.....

Need I go on?
:)

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

yeah i dig your point...he and all the pedal maufacturers are doing similar stuff with similar circuits and compnents. He is good at marketing... but its not like thats a bad thing.

However i buy pedals...mass produced and otherwise...im pretty sure im not a sheep. Is that really how you see your customers?

:laugh2: Haha well.....sometimes a Bordercollie would be handy...
Ah well you guys are kinda like sheep....not that most think much about it!

I like pedals too....but most I get for reference purposes.
Just to keep myself real about the socalled greatness of modern times:cool:

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

I have had a Blackstar OD for just over a year now and really like it.

Pros
- tube OD at high voltages
- sounds great to my ears - nice and thick
- emulated output that sounds pretty good. I use it once in awhile for late night recording

Cons
- knob locations are really hard to see
- need a 16V (I think it is 16V?) supply
- big
- pots can get a bit scratchy

I have seen them used from time to time for around 100 to 110 bucks which is great price in my opinion

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

I got a few Tube OD's I got a chance to revisit - I need to revisit again.

While testing out my new to me Suhr Shiba OD yesterday, I dusted off my old Real Tube. I've had that thing over 20 years I know, maybe closer to 25. I was always dissapointed with it. It crackled whe controls were turned, and just did not sound like I wanted. Swapped tubes to no avail. Used OS AT's and AU's.

Its a good size for a tube pedal, maybe a slight bit bigger than a Boss Pedal casing. But anyway I did a quick cleanup to give a little comparison... also changed the tube to an 12AV7. I went into an univalve then tried with a Marshall 50 watt.... While the Shiba is a very clean, transparent OD, the Real Tube came into its own - not transparent, but had that little bit of "Hair" sound I wanted and no crackle. Must have hit upon the right tube because that's what I've been looking for. It's got a little hum, but not too much, probably would benefit from a little shielding around the transformer area.

I even A/B'ed it with a BK Tube Driver - There's a hella difference in favor of the Real Tube. Way more organic and just had "it" going. The Shiba stacked into it was really nice too, Which is probably the way I'll use it.. Time to swap tubes in the TD. :-)

Well - its one of the cheaper options.

I've had a Mesa V-Twin (Not close enough for me, but now might be worth another shot) and I have an Budda Zen. FullDrive Flat mids seemed like a fairly transparent, yet compressed sound. Could not get along with a Fulltone Distortion Pro or the GT-500.

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

To the OP: I hate to sound like a GC salesperson, but how much are you thinking of spending? Some of the pedals suggested in this thread are more expensive than your amp...

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

The only tube overdrive I've ever owned that I've held onto is the Siegmund Missing Link. It's the only "boutique" thing I still have around that I swear by. It uses some pretty unique miniature tubes, but the vibe is unlike anything I've ever used before. It made my rig a million times better and I can't imagine not having it around (my tone would be darker, muddier and less punchy without it). I don't use it as a primary distortion pedal through a clean amp though. I use it to push the frontend of my amp essentially as a clean boost pedal. Depending on what application you're looking for, it could be a good fit for you.

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

hughes & kettner tube factor, don't know if they still make 'em. awesome pedal if you can find it.

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

The Bad Monkey is a great OD pedal and is inexpensive.

I have and dig the Twin Tube Classic, but rarely use it anymore. Wanna buy it? Like new with original box. :bigok:

Re: Tube Overdrive pedals, whats your favorite?

The Twin Tube is the only one I have used that actually played like a tube. There are many are great pedals that have a tube in them, but really do little with it. This one responds like a tube preamp. I have not tried tem all for sure, but most do not have a tube amp's responsiveness.
