Tube screamers

I am looking for a tube screamer to add to my board and I have been stuck between the digitech bad monkey and the famous Ibanez tube screamer. Anyone with experience with both of these peddles or someone have something for me to check out before I make a decision?

Re: Tube screamers

Because its going to get asked...is there a specific TS model you are looking at as well? i.e. TS9 or 808 etc.

Re: Tube screamers

10 years back I would have recommended the bad monkey. Not now. It sounds great I am not denying that and very cheap. But that's the problem. Mine suddenly died. It would either remain on or switch off, would not go into bypass mode. And nothing much can be done. I traded it for a Duncan Designed HB 102 . The guy who took it thought he could get it repaired. He did but it was not worth it at all. As it died totally after that.
Go for the Ibanez much better built IMO

Re: Tube screamers

All I can suggest is to play a bunch of different TS pedals; in most cases the cost of admission isn't all that high. The TS808 variety is quite popular, but I personally prefer a TS9. My favorite is the Maxon OD9 which is similar in output / gain to the Ibanez, but smoother and less grainy.

Re: Tube screamers

Another vote for the Maxon OD9 -- definitely has a place at the grownups' table.

Re: Tube screamers

If you can find one, look for the Visual Sound Route 808, Double Trouble or any of the V1 or V2 series dual pedals with an overdrive side (all the same 808 based circuit).

Re: Tube screamers

My recent favorite has been my Wylde Overdrive. If you get a used one, you may be able to mod it to be switchable between its stock form and the MXR GT-OD. They used to install the same PCB in both boards and flip a switch on it depending on which enclosure it would make its home. With my Les Paul, I use the GT-OD form, and my PRS SE Custom sounds much better with the Wylde Overdrive, which scoops the mids a bit more for a very crunchy rhythm tone. So basically, you're getting two for one if you buy that pedal.

I think they got wise to it in later revisions and stopped doing it, but I'm not sure how to tell the difference. Maybe the ones that say Berzerker Overdrive no longer have that option?

I don't think it was the Wylde OD, but I know that the MXR Classic OD did and can be had on Reverb right now for $50. I bought one from GC for $40 brand new (I think they were on sale) and my dad and I modded it so that the switch is on top of the pedal and I could switch it when I pleased.

I would definitely look at one of those on Reverb. If you can score one with free shipping and are handy with a soldering iron (or know a great tech in the area) a great dual mode OD/ TS clone can be had for $60-75.

Re: Tube screamers

I've never used the Bad Monkey, but I went through a number of TS clones earlier this year and personally, I liked the Green Rhino the best. It seemed to push my amp a bit harder than other tube screamers and felt much easier to fine tune to my rig.

Re: Tube screamers

I really like the Ibanez TS808 mini. It sounds like a tubescreamer, it's inexpensive and durable. They all sound like tubescreamers.

All tubescreamers sound the same, unless they have special EQ controls or completely different clipping or diodes in them.

Re: Tube screamers

Outside of the 805 Overdrive, I like the Bad Monkey's 2 band EQ. It has a more 'rounded' sound to my ears than a typical TS, and hey, its seriously cheap. No reason not to get one and keep it, even if you eventually move on to other overdrives.

Re: Tube screamers

I own the MXR Classic Overdrive (same as the GT-OD) and an Ibanez TS808. I love both. I prefer the TS808 for boosting high-gain amps, though.

I used to own a Maxon OD9. MUCH prefer the TS808. They sound like 99% the same, but the switch on the Maxon is super finicky, and the TS808 sounds a tiny tiny bit smoother.

I have tried and compared the EHX East River Drive with my TS's, and I think that one's a great pedal as well, especially for the money.

Re: Tube screamers

I just got an Ibanez TS7 off Ebay for under $40. It has "TS9" and "Hot" modes, and they sound radically different from each other. Since I just got it, I'm still getting used to it, but the price of admission was right, and so far I really like it in TS9 mode. Even if it isn't what you like, at that price, you could always re-sell it and recoup your entire investment.

Re: Tube screamers

The bad monkey does have a great equaliser though. The controls for high and low work very well.

Re: Tube screamers

Do not overlook the digitech/hardwire tube overdrive. fantastic ts type pedal with some tweaking option s. I think the are discontinued but try used.

My fave is probably the old TS10 I used for years bitd.

I had a tube overdrive and I liked it but the switch in it broke and it wouldn't turn off so I sold it. It was a great peddle that was for sure.

There were some Wylde OD's that had the switch as well. It was before they switched to the Wylde Beserker OD where the three knobs were all in line.
