Tube/tube amp question

My Splawn has been making a funny noise for awhile, so Ive not been able to play it. :disappoin

Im trying to get i back up and running. I put all new preamp tubes in it and that didnt help. I just got a quartet of power tubes for it. I know I need to get it biased and Im gonna put it in the shop to have that done and check out the prob. Im itching to know if its just the tubes or if there is another issue. Would it be terribly damaging to put the new tubes in an try it for a coupla min to see if it is still doing the same thing?

Biasing is recommended for an amp to perform at an optimum tonal level. However, bias settings vary tube to tube and some players bias their amps outside the suggested range for personal preference.
I've installed tubes without biasing with no ill affects. Your amp won't blow up on you. The amp may sound poor or the might sound just fine. As long as they aren't red plating you're safe.

Re: Tube/tube amp question

Red plating?? Meaning burning too hot?

I plan to get a proper bias, I just want to see if the noise is still there with the new tubes. That way, Ill know if I just need a bias or if I need a repair and bias.. I miss this amp and after hearing a ton of kicking live music this weekend, Im REALLY ready to get this baby fired up!

Re: Tube/tube amp question

I typed a big reply out last night and then my phone crashed before I could post it

When I put the JJ EL34s in my Splawn to replace the original/stock Valve Art EL34s we had to lower the bias about 2/3s of the way down the bias pot to get them within range. So I assume the stock valves were being run very hot.

As to whether it'd cause you any problems just to put them in briefly; I'm not sure.

Sorry for the pretty useless reply :D

Maybe, you can find of interest my own first biasing experience:

Re: Tube/tube amp question

Have you thought about trying over on the Splawn board mate?

There's a few people there that have had issues with theirs so someone may know how to solve it for you.

Yeah, I asked.. no help.. tubes or tech

Toe-Knee, kinda hard to define. flubby noise on low strings and today with the new tubes it was squeeling like a pig

Re: Tube/tube amp question

Have you tried calling Splawn? I used to live not far from Splawn and knew a few guys that bought direct and said Scott was a great guy to deal with. Maybe a benefit of a small amp maker, and no one should know that amp better then him!

Re: Tube/tube amp question

I called and asked, but they suggested tubes.. I thought about calling again when Im actually playing it so they can hear what its doing

Re: Tube/tube amp question

I had a similar problem when I had my DSL 100. Found out it was the power in the room in which I was rehearsing. Maybe you should check into a power conditioner, as that fixed the problem I was having.
