Tubes for a Soldano Astroverb 16

Soldanonians,

My buddy has a 2x12 Astroverb 16 and one of his power tubes just went on him last night at practice. It was a Sovtek EL84. He's had the amp about a year and that got him to thinking about trying different power and preamp tubes for it and keeping the stock ones as back-ups. This amp is incredible and the current tone is great but it's always nice to go out there and try something different. I always felt that tubes are relatively inexpesive and yet they make such a huge impact on the amp's tone that it's worth finding the perfect ones. Anyone have experience with different tubes for that amp? The stock preamp tubes are Sovtek 12AX7s.

i had gt's and jj's in that amp and i liked the jj's far more. it really tames the high end bite that, that amp can have with the wrong tubes. it sounded too harsh with the stock sovteks and the GT el84s. the 12ax7's (also jj's) made a big difference too. i put a 12au7 in the reverb too and smoothed that out too.
