TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

Solid State is definitely better. Tubes tend to break up and distort the guitar signal, especially at moderate to loud volume levels. Solid State stays nice and clean.

There's a whole industry of pedal manufacturers who create pedals that attenuate the guitar signal to try to help from overloading tube amps. I say . . . just spend the extra money for solid state to begin with.

nod, nod, wink, wink.

Tubes are better. Solid state amps are harsh sounding.

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

I'll answer the question as soon as you can define "better" in non-relative, non-subjective terms.

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

I have seen 4 shows in the past 3 weeks. 2 shows with dudes that played tube amps and two shows with dudes who used SS.

Hands down (IMO) (<-- gosh I hate having to say that) the tones from the tube amps sounded so much better it was ridiculous.

i have yet to play or hear a SS amp that cuts the mustard for me.

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

Tube amps usually have much better tone (not always) and I prefer them. (someone will disagree...so be it)

SS amps usually cost less (given the "specs" of the amps are similar)

Tube amps usually need more ongoing care/maitenance.

Tube amps are heavier (again, given that the specs are the same/similar)

Tube amps are warmer to sit on if you have a cold a$$, but might eliminate the need for you to get a vasectomy if you sit on them for long durations.

These are all generalizations, although I have never found SS amps very warm to sit on.

I have no idea what you just said, but I like the idea of solid tubes.:laugh2:

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

tubes rule, but there are conditions that apply to both. Generaly ss amps are cheaper but might not always get great tone. However, although im a tube amp player I really liked the fender fm series head and any of the roland cube amps.

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

It totally depends on you and the sound you want.

The main thing I play is rock, so distortion is must. When I use ss amps distortion is usually harsh and fizzy on the high end all the time. When using tube amps distortion is usually is smoother and with little or no fizz on the high end.

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

Unless of course you're using a rectifier...which is just fizzy at the high end :laugh2:
