TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

ive never herd anyone say "solid state sounds better than tube".

but

SS is less hassle than tube and if you want high gain at low volumes you kinda need SS. (edit:or a distortion pedle)

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

if there is another guitarist in your band ss may not cut through the mix

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

SS=Dry/Harsh

If that's what you're looking for, SS is the way to go. George Lynch uses solid states some of the time. I know he's used an RG80 on many songs and his clean tone comes from a JC120.

The problem with SS is, most companies make SS amps as cheap practice amps instead of using quality componets. So when you get into highend SS, most people would rather spend the same money on tubes than what they would assume to be a expensive "practice" amp.

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

I like the dry, harsh :D

SS=clarity to me. I love it.

You can't get as smooth distortion from an SS amp. Instead you get a harsh, venomous shriek :D I love it. With the right pedal, the distorted tones are much clearer and nastier than a tube amp... But SS amps seem to have a ****load of headroom so.

I agree with what Mephis says about most SS amps these days being cheap. Get one from the 60s, back when SS was something to brag about ;) they put the good componentry in em back then :D

If you're too quiet, bump up the wattage ;)

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

Just look at almost anything randall has ever done if you want a fine example of good SS amps. If I didn't have my 6505 I would have an RG80.

Man, pump up the presence and the treble on my KRANK, you can get some pretty ****in nasty tones ;).

Must point out though, depending on what amp you got, tube or solid state, headroom is variable. My '68 fender showman = miles of headroom. My old JCM800=not so much.

I've actually found most solid state amps to be rather lacking in the headroom department ;). With the exception of the roland JC120.

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

It all depends- Some metal players like solid state amps for their distorted tone (Dimebag?) and some jazz or R&B players want a clean amp that won't distort...

For most styles in between, or at least for me, it's: Tubes or not to be :friday:

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

SS=Dry/Harsh.
+1.
Tubes are better for my ears and i can get pretty nasty overdrive from my amp, and both clean and overdrive channels retain clarity and certain smoothness that I simply love.
sure there are good and bad amps, and everyone have specific ear and tastes and because of that we have various types of gear:)
e.g. I really dislike Peavey 112Valve King and Epi Valve Junior - i just don't like the tone but i'm sure there are people ot there who are in love with some tones that others hate.
I think that TONE and FEEL is important factor not the parts and materials that gear is built from.
not everything with e.g. Fender or Gibson will play and sound better than other brands.

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

Perhaps...... but this question does smack of a hoax...

I thought so, too. But the myspace site appears "real."

I'm with aleclee on this one. We need more info before the question can be answered adequately.

Artie, you ARE sick.:chairfall

Who would've thought you would take that side????

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

this thread amuses me.

be careful with that hot tubes!

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

Go solid state if you want your guitar amp to double as a 'boost' for your home stereo...

Re: TUBES or SOLID STATE?v to be or not to be...

I think tubes sound better, clean or dirty. Old Fenders and Voxes have
the best clean sounds ever to exist. Marshalls have the best dirty sounds,
IMHO. However, if you must play at low volumes, like I do at home, solid
state is the way to go. With modelling amps and ss amplification I can get
decent sounds to practise with at home. Tube amps don't sound very good
at low volumes.
