Tubes talk #2,332,876

Thames

Great White Malice
Havent seen a thread on tubes here for a long time... time to start another one!

Post your new findings, discoveries, and worst ones...

Throwing some meat... :

- Bob @ Eurotubes received the first run of new JJ ECC83 LONG PLATES.
- GT should come out soon with a new EL34 Mullard repro (announced at NAMM)... but when ??!
- NewSensor has reissued a Mullard EL34, which is getting some VERY nice reviews so far... "a Svetlana (SED) with smoother/sweeter high-end" is what Im hearing here and there.

Also, I heard more and more bad reviews about the GT 12AX7-Mullard.. microphonics!!

I recently swapped a JJ 12AT7 in V1 of a Blues Deville for a EH 12AX7. Stronger, "sparklier" tone. However the 12AT7 provided a much better clean headroom...

I also raise the BIAS from -25 to -40 mV on my Laney, smokin' tone!! :smokin:

Your turn....

Not much to say but i'm really excited about the new JJ ECC83S which is supposedly very very close to the good 'ol Telefunken!

Re: Tubes talk #2,332,876

I'm awaiting a pair of GT 12AX7C tubes to put in V1 and V2 of my Rectoverb, with JJ ECC83S tubes in V3,4, and the phase inverter spot. I've heard some great things about the GT tubes, so I'm looking forward to hearing them. Right now I have two Shuguang 9th gen Chinese tubes in those spots.

I spoke to Bob, and he's out of the 803's.

BTW, his prices are going up a little in a couple days, partly due to a strong Euro.

Hmm... I think the Chinese 9th gen and the GT12AX7-C are the same exact tube...

Re: Tubes talk #2,332,876

I believe you're right, Thames

I have one in my Bassman, but I should try it in my smaller amps that I play more.

regarding the GT "Mullard", here are some comments from Lord Valve:

"There was a batch of these that would
work fine for 20-30 hours and then start making Harley
noises. This batch is history, and the current stuff
is good. Nevertheless, I'm applying my full screening
process to every GT 12AX7-M I ship, just in case."

Those things happen when people are looking at you... like other stuff happening while your alone and you say "damn! I wish someone would have seen me!" :laugh2: :laugh2:

:chairfall

Re: Tubes talk #2,332,876

Exactly, I just usually have the first happen more often than the latter ;). Ah well, if nothing else, watch for a pair of GT 12AX7C's up for a good price in the trading post :laugh2:

no need to at all

there are some intentionally confusing things out there regarding the way tubes are marketed and labeled ;)

so don't feel alone, but we should also point those things out when we see them

Thanks Curly, but the reason I feel silly is because I paid $28 for the pair of GT tubes and $15 for three of the Shuguang tubes :laugh2:. No biggie, I'll just resell the GT pair for a small loss (and maybe try one of the Mullard reissues).
